EXCERPTS from Friday sermons by Ayatullah Javadi Amuli

Date of del: Fri 1st Jamadi al-Ula, 1420
Place: Musalla e Quds in the Holy City of Qum

1st SERMON

1. The advice on taqwa will be based on a brief commentary of sermon 107 of Nahjul Balagha. Since Sayyid Radhi had compiled the sermons on the criterion of eloquence, not as a complete collection of sermons & sayings, hence no chain of narrators are

mentioned and some portions are deleted or in some cases several parts of different sermons are combined into one. e.g. the fuller version of the long letter of Hadhrat Amirul Mu'mineen Imam `Ali (pbuh) to his governor in Egypt is recorded in the book Tuhal al-'Uqul.

2. The main points covered in the 2nd section of the sermon (NB the 1st section was discussed in a previous Friday sermon) are as follows:

a. the weakness of the people in Iraq

b. the evil nature of the despot of Sham

c. the effects of the despot's attack on such a people.

3. Brief clarification of the above mentioned points.

a. people of Iraq were of several types:

i. "those with bodies but no spirit" ie they have strength to act but do so without understanding the truth

ii. "those who have spirit but no bodies!" ie they understand the truth but do not act on it

The description of 'seeing but blind' is based on the Quranic portrayal of such people

ref. Holy Quran ch. 7, verse 198

b. "leader of misguidance ...... is an outcast from the community of the Muslim faithfuls....."

refers to Muawiya, the despot of Sham

c. when such a brain-washed weak & vulnerable people of Iraq are then attacked by the despot, the result is "none from among you will remain except as a sediment from a cooking pot

........" since he would uproot as many believers as possible; those that survive the massacre probably do so because the despot could not reach them!

4. This prediction & warning of Hazrat Ali (pbuh) also applies to our situation today.

We are under potential attacks from all sides. Saddam despite having lost, still claims total victory!

He's been kept alive for possible use in the future against Islam.

Taliban are waiting for an opportune moment to ambush & attack the IRI.

Turkey has signed a military pact with the biggest enemy of the IRI ie Israel

Hence, we need to be alert & awake at all times against all possible threats.

2nd SERMON

1. I advise the faithful to observe taqwa, as it is the only provision on the journey to the Hereafter. Also Hadhrat Ali (pbuh) reminds us "Taqwa is the foundation of all good moral behaviour"

2. We celebrated last month the birth anniversary of Hadhrat Zainab (pbuh) which in the IRI has been designated as Nurse's Day. Suffice to say of Hadhrat's elevated status that she has been described by the 4th Holy Imam (pbuh) to be " 'Alimah ghair mu'allamah" ie teacher without having been taught by a human agency. This clearly indicates she was beloved to God the Almighty as a WALIYY of Allah since she received direct teaching from God.

3.We commemorate the 11th anniversay of return of POWs

4. The Holy City of Qum witnessed a tragic incident of armed robbery in the city center. We appreciate the efforts of the police in restoring order but more important was the role played by the brave people of this City of Blood & Uprising, City of Jihad & Ijtihad, when a few citizens staked their lives in defence of the city's security and were killed in the process. Indeed such people enjoy a special sacred status in Islam which teaches us that whosoever is killed in defence of his property or person or family's honor is a MARTYR.

We urge that
a. the diyah (blood-money) of the martyrs be paid from the public funds since they sacrificed their lives to uphold public safety.

b. Their families be taken care by the Foundation of the Martyrs.

c. In fact, even the tablet on their graves should mention their great sacrifice.

Indeed only religious training can produce such readiness to sacrifice one's precious life for such a cause.

5. Despite all good intentions demonstarted by IRI toward our neighbour Turkey, to the extent that their soldiers captured in an invasion into our territory were returned safely to them, we haven't seen any reciprocal goodness.

Let them not mistake our silence as a sign of weakness. Indeed the revolution suceeded in expelling the superpower from the region in a manner which was unexpected by the believers and surprising to the disbelievers.

Consider the manner in which the Jews who conspired against the Islamic state in Madinah were expelled from the outskirts, as mentioned in sura al-Hashr, ch. 59 v. 26. May the Lord elevate the status of the diplomats martyred last year by the Taliban forces in their attack on the IRI Consulate.
