Budgerigars

I started breeding budgerigars when I was in high school.

My brother and I always admired my grandfather's variety of birds, but his budgerigars always amused us with their comical actions. This brought about the initial interest in keeping and breeding them.

We then decided to build an aviary of our own which was initially 2.4m x 1.5m. Thereafter, very excited, went to the pet shop and purchased 2 pairs. After settling in they simply amused us. Two weeks later a cousin of ours came to visit us and found an interest in our birds. He then decided to give his two budgerigars to us as presents.

When we received the birds we released them in the aviary. Our existing birds were very inquisitive and soon found themselves new friends.

Within a few weeks the excitement escalated when we discovered there were eggs in some of the nest boxes and even greater so, when the chicks arrived.

Within a year we had bred close to 100 birds.

After about year thereafter, we had to get rid of our birds because of further studies. These were very sad moments.

During the course of time I always went to pet shops to admire some of the new budgerigars that came in.

In the mean time I had found a lady I loved very well and got married to her and we had a mutual love for pets.

We then decided to get hold of some Show budgerigars after seeing a lovely pair in the local pet shop.

I managed to get hold of a breeder who assisted us in our initial stock. We purchased six birds from him, which were of fair quality.

Within a few weeks the birds were in breeding condition, so we placed them in breeding cages and within a week or two some eggs appeared. This was very exciting.

After 18 days our chicks started hatching. The exciting moments had arrived, especially hearing those tiny squeaks of the chicks begging for food.

When the chicks had grown we discovered that some of them turned out to be of quite good quality. This promoted great enthusiasm and we went on breeding.

In the interim we purchased new bloodlines and which yielded good results.

We are still at it after all these years and simply enjoy this wonderful hobby.
