Handwritten Notes by
Ebenezer Pool of
Rockport, Massachusetts

These notes were written sometime after 1870 (probably in March of 1870), as evidenced by references to that year in the notes themselves. The originals are in the possession of Charles L. Norwood of New York, whose father Howard L. Norwood left them to him. Howard Lester Norwood (1896-1965) did genealogical research in the 1930s and perhaps during the remainder of his life. Whether these notes are his transcriptions from the originals of Ebenezer Pool or a set given by E. Pool to his father , Charles Naman Norwood (1848-1916), who has written on them in his own hand, I do not know. During this period, the early 1870s, William Henry Norwood, grandson of Ebenezer Pool was in contact with his grandfather, and apparently asked about his ancestry, for Ebenezer Pool wrote many genealogical notes around this time. Most of the correspondence at this time focused on members of the family, their fortunes and losses, as well as those of the communities of Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts. [I have kept E.P.'s punctuation, capitalization, and spelling throughout the manuscript. My own comments will be contained in square brackets. The remark "interlined" follows a word or words that were added to the text by E.P. as afterthoughts or corrections.]
