JOSEPH WILBUR Cox, Engelhard, Hyde Co, NC; Joseph Wilbur Cox, 75, of the Middletown community in Engelhard, died Monday, June 9 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Born in Middletown on Nov 29, 1921 he was the son of the late James Monroe and Lillie Swindell Cox. He was a member of the Middletown Christian Church. Mr. Cox served in the US Army during World War II where he earned the rank of Tech. 5 Coxswain. He served in company with a boat battalion, 533rd boat and shore regiment. He received two bronze stars for service in the Philippines and earned four bronze stars in the American Theatre, and Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He also earned a bronze arrowhead and victory medal during his 3 years and 4 months of service. He operated a mechanic shop in Middletown with his brother for several years, later worked as a commercial fisherman and captained shrimp boats in Key West, Florida. In 1963 he began work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service at Mattamuskett National Wildlife Refuge where he retired in 1981. Surviving are his wife, Nell Camp Cox; two sons: Richard M Cox of Norfolk, VA and Joseph Redden Cox of Engelhard; two sisters: Lucille Cox Osborne of Engelhard and Margie Cox Scott of Wilkesboro; and 4 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3pm Thursday in Middletown Christian Church. The Rev. Albert Stuck, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. JULIA MAE BRINN Cox, Engelhard, Hyde Co, NC; Julia Mae Brinn Cox 82, died Tuesday, Sept 8 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. Born in Hyde County on August 2, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Topping and Annie Rose Brinn. She was the widow of James Earl Cox who died in 1966. She worked for several years at Mattamuskeet Lodge and later at Etheridge Oil and Gas in Engelhard prior to ther retirement. She was a member of Engelhard Christian Church. Surviving are her sister, Terry H Elkins; her children: Bill Hardison and wife Bernice of Dallas, Texas, Millie Andrew of Engelhard, Maybell Stevens of Kill Devil Hills, Sylvia Neal of Engelhard; her sisters-in-law: Wilma Brinn Carawan of Engelhard, Nell C Cox and Lucille Osborne of Middletown, and Margie Scott of North Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Friday in Engelhard Christian Church. Scott Sukeforth and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in Fulford Cemetery. SOPHIA WATSON Cox, Fairfield, Hyde Co, NC; Sophia Watson Cox, 67, ofFairfield (Newlands community) died July 5 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. A Hyde County native, she was the daughter of the late Romulus and Lessie Bunbar Watson. She was the widow of Thomas Clifton Cox. Mrs. Cox was a retired livestock farmer, a member of the Fairfield Christian Church, a member of the Fairfield Book Club and was a member of the Fairfield Cemetery Circle. Surviving are three sons: Clifton RayCox and Eugene Cox, both of Fairfield, adn Vernon Gray Cox of Selma; four brothers: Elvin Watson of Washington, Preston Watson of Plymouth, Romulus Watson of Columbia, and Gilbert Watson of Gray, Georgia; two sisters: Neva Pearl Gage of Garner, and Jackie Meyers of Gray, Georgia; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at 2 pm July 7 at the family plot in Fairfield cemetery with Leon Williams officiating. Arrangements by Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter. WALTER CLYDE Cox, Columbia, Hyde Co, NC; Walter Clyde Cox, age 85, wel-known retired merchant and farmer of Washington and Chocowinity, died suddenly Sunday at 5:30 am January 23 at the home of his daughter Mrs. D.M. Bridgman of Columbia, whom he had been visiting the past few weeks. Mr. Cox was born in Middletown, Hyde County, on November 1,1869,son of Jeremiah and Mary White Cox. He was the last member of a pioneer family of Hyde County and held the high esteem and respect of the entire county. He was a member of the Christian Church and was active in the Haw Branch Christian Church. He moved to Washington in September of 1924 where he operated a mercantile business until his retirement. He was twice married, his first marriage being to Ella Olivia Brooks, who preceded him in death April 15, 1933. To this unio was born Mrs. Cecil Sawyer of Wilmington, Mrs. N.O. Marshall of LaPorte, Indiana, Mrs. Cottie Lee Sullivan of Wilson, Mrs. D.M. Bridgman ofColumbia and Mrs. Lloyd R Latham of Washington, who survive. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. His second marriage was to Blanche Griffen Lewis, who preceded him in death inNovember of 1948. Funeral services were held from the chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington on Jan 25th at 3 pm by the Rev. Frank Butler. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery, Many friends will be honorary pallbearers and active pallbearers were Clifton Barr, Hubert Jones, Plum Hill, Rupert Williams, Bruce Alcox, Frank Jones, Swindell Clark, Pete Clark and Grey Chesson.
