IN DECEMBER OF 1982, AT THE AGE OF 90

I  was born in Shelby, Texas, on November 3rd, 1892, to William and Augusta
Schlabach.  All of my Dad’s and Mother’s family lived in or around Shelby (inAustin County).  When I was about three or four years of age, my Daddy moved us from Shelby to Nordheim, Texas.  We moved in a covered wagon, pulled by a team of horses.  We made at least two trips back to Shelby in the wagon, for visiting the relatives.  It must have been 1895 when Dad moved us
to the farm in Nordheim (in De Witt County).

It was in Nordheim, I started school.... about age seven.  We walked three miles to school.  Mama boarded the teacher, a Mr. Lightfoot; he walked with us.  We always cut through the pasture on a trail.  One day my sister, Erna, was walking ahead of us.  She was bitten by a rattlesnake.  I do not remember what happened after that, but she was in the hospital for a long time.
