Our Organist, Charles Sparey

Charles Sparey has been our full organist since 1994 and was assistant organist for four years before that. Having been interested in music from an early age he first started by learning to play the guitar at the age of six in 1981. Four years later he moved onto the piano and keyboard before finally migrating onto the organ. In addition to much practical experience he also studied advanced music theory and is very interested in choral and baroque music being an active member of Peterhouse College choir, as a tenor, during his time there. In addition to church music he also regularly plays jazz piano and was a keen member of several folk dance bands as well as assisting with training the national folk team.

In terms of music within church, Charles Sparey's key concept is variety to enhance the quality of music. As shuch he is equally happy playing tradition hymns on the organ, a voluntry by JS Bach, or a modified choral work on the keyboard with the aid of a computer based sequencer. He also actively works with the worship groups within the church and is a member of Sonny Side Up during holiday periods. Likewise, for special services, he also actively encourages all the musicians to play together in a larged massed group using musically inspiring arrangements to enhance the quality of worship.

Apart from music his other hobbies include dance, history and the internet as well as the use of computers within church. As a result he was actively involved with the church multimedia service and views this type of activity as a way of bridging the generation gap.
