A Very Warm Welcome from SGBA's President Edna Lowery

Edna M. Lowery

The State Government Bar Association was organized as a way for state government lawyers in all branches of government to get to know each other, and we schedule Continuing Legal Education classes (CLE) of special interest to government lawyers during our monthly lunch meetings. I was honored to be elected President last year but the organization thrives on the contributions of its members time and efforts--especially in finding good speakers. The dues are $15.00 per year, which includes an annual Holiday Luncheon which is worth $8.00 if you can attend. Some agencies will pay bar dues. Others will not.

We meet the last Tuesday of every month at the State Bar Center to hear CLE presentations. Box lunches are catered for $7.00 per person for anyone that E-mails us and reserves a lunch. (If you want a lunch reserved let me know what kind of sandwich you prefer). We have had several new members join recently, and I believe they and older members will find the organization useful and enjoyable.

In the past, we have had programs on such things as defending Section 1983 actions, practice update for the Personnel Board, updates of Open Records law, and Ethical issues for State attorneys etc. We have speakers lined up for the next several months and can always use ideas or speaker contacts for future months.

In addition to CLE, the SGBA is a good place to make contacts that are often useful in practicing law as a State attorney.

If you want to join, please fill out our on-line application form and mail your annual dues to SGBA at P.O. Box 1536, Frankfort, Kentucky 40602. You can also pay your dues when you come to your first meeting.

We are interested in getting a wide spectrum of state government attorneys involved, so feel free to pass this on to your fellow LRC attorneys. I hope you will join and find membership useful.
