Scripture reveals Jesus as not only the savior of humanity, but the stumbling block; the one over whom people trip and fall to their own destruction (Luke 20:17-18; Romans 9:33 1 Corinthians 1:23; 1 Peter 2:6-8; John 9:39; Isaiah 8:13-15; 28:16,19,22). The inevitable result of Jesus’ offer of salvation is the damnation of those who reject that offer.
Luke 20:17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, ‘Then what is the meaning of that which is written: “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone”? (18) Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.’
Romans 9:33 As it is written: ‘See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’
1 Corinthians 1:23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
1 Peter 2:6 For in Scripture it says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’ (7) Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,’ (8) and, ‘A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the message - which is also what they were destined for.
John 9:39 Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.’
Isaiah 8:13 The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread, (14) and he will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. (15) Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured.’
