HOW THEY GROW UP:
I raise my Birmans in a very family oriented fashion with my husband and
two children. The kittens are brought up with love and socialization. They
are child friendly - with gentle children that is. My children have been
taught to respect animals and to have patience with the little kittens.
Birmans are very loving and affectionate cats, and are slow to anger. I
have never had my cats bite or scratch my two children. The kittens are
born in my bedroom - I am the midwife - and they remain there until they
are 6 -8 weeks old. When they are weaning from mom, they live in my living
room and are allowed to play and romp with the rest of my family. Once
they have their first shots at 8 weeks, they can have visitors come a take
a look, and play with them.
WHEN CAN THEY GO?:
Birman
moms are very attached to their babies, and often let them have a sneak
at nursing long after they have been weaned to solid food. I like to keep
my babies here until they are at least 14 weeks old. That way, they have
their shots and are old enough to handle the separation, and they can handle
the change into a new home. I have always gone with the belief that everyone
needs someone. I do believe that if the house is empty during the day it
would be ideal if the kitten would have a playmate. Now I am not saying
you must have two birmans, but a companion from the shelter would make
a great brother or sister for your Birman baby. Its just a thought. You
may not want more than one kitten. If this is the case, then you must make
sure that your baby has toys and a cat tree, and is safe during the day
from mischief.
