!CENSUS:1900 Union Co Oregon CENSUS:1860 Essex Co., Massachusetts, Gloucester pg 305 CENSUS:1850 Essex Co., Massachusetts, Lynn pg 339 !MARRIAGE:Marriage Rec., Union Co., Oregon !My great-grandfather ran away from home when he was 18 years old (probably about the time his father died and his mother remarried, but we will never know for sure). When he married many years later, he told my great-grandmother to never try to find his family because she would only be hurt (we will probably never know the reason for this either). So no one tried to find out anything about his family, until I came along with the Genealogy Bug. It took me years to find his family and when I did, it all just fell into to place. It would have been a much easier job, if his daughter had remembered that she had his obituary stuck away in a box of papers, which answered questions it took me many years to find the answers to. !DEATH:Obituary- Robert F. Lewis died last Thursday, 6 Jan 1916 at his home at the Lewis Post Office, of a kidney trouble, after an illness of a few weeks. The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. B. Astwood at the home Friday, 7 Jan and burial was in the Enterprise cemetary on Saturday. Mr. Lewis was born at Lynn, Massachusetts, 6 April 1850. When a young man, he moved to Omaha, Neb. whence he came to Oregon 26 years ago, locating at Elgin. He was married there, 20 June 1891 to Miss Alta Swikert, and they came to Wallowa Co. in 1913 and took up there homestead in the uplands east of Crow Creek, where the postoffice was established shortly afterward to seve the many settlers of the district. Mrs. Lewis and three children survive: Mrs. Susie Klien, George and Sylvia Lewis. (Discovered in Sylvia's things after her death) !BIRTH:Lynn, Massachusetts Birth Records states that they lived at Chippeway Court. It says that he was a fisherman and born in Lynn and that she was born in Gloucester. !MILITARY:"Oregon State 1890 Special Federal Census of Union Veterns and their Widows" lists him right below Jacob C. Swikert, but states no papers were found to give information.

Robert married Alta Elizabeth SWIKERT, daughter of Jacob C. SWIKERT and Susannah Adeline HAVENS, on 27 Jun 1890 in Elgin, Union, Oregon. (Alta Elizabeth SWIKERT was born on 24 Jun 1874 in Bellwood, Butler, Nebraska, died on 23 May 1936 in Helmer, Latah, Idaho and was buried in Pinecrest Cem., Deary, Latah, Idaho.)
