AMYE GIFFARD OF THE TOWN OF NORTHAMPTON 1618

Amye Giffard of the town of Northampton, widow.

My body to be buried in the church of All Saints Northampton, where Frances SAMWELL Esquire & Mary Samwell, his wife, my father & mother, with other of my kindred deceased are buried.

To such people who come to St James at the day of my funeral 40s between them or as my executors think fit.

To my daughter Marie Gifford, an annuity of 20 marks & if she happens to survive Alexander MORES her now husband, and to have issue of the said Alexander, then my executor to pay my daughter Marie 200 marks

To my said daughter Marie the bedstead in my mother Giffard's chamber wherein my son George did sometime lie etc [numerous items].... & all the little boxes that stand upon the cupboard table in my lodging chamber, except one which I give my daughter Elizabeth Gifford

To George Gifford my son 200 marks & an annuity etc [numerous items] ...& items in a box... the rest of the lawn & cambric in the said box to my daughters Elizabeth & Marie

To my son Thomas Gifford 100 marks etc [numerous items]

To Elizabeth Gifford my daughter in law, wife to my said son Thomas Gifford [numerous items] & candlesticks except the brazen ones given to my daughter Jane

To Francis Gifford my son a tablecloth and [numerous items]

To Jane Gifford my daughter in law, wife of my said son Francis Gifford a linen wheel etc

To every one of the youngest sons of Sir William Samwell, Knight, an angel of gold apiece

To my sister LOVE the gilden platter which was my fathers

To Roger Giffard son of the said Francis Giffard £3 & my husband's wedding shirt wrought with gold strings. And to every other the children of my son Francis Giffard, being 10 in number, 20s apiece

To my cousin Elizabeth MORTON 10s.  To Mr RUSHBROOKE of Northampton 20s.  To Walter CURTIS my servant 20s.  To my cousin Thomas LUDLOW 5s.  To William AUSTEN 5s.  To every of my servants 12d apiece.  To my cousin George Samwell 10s. To my sister MOULSO a "cornett & a Billyment" . The residue to Francis Giffard my son, my sole executor

To my son John Minchin £10 when 16 years.  To John GIBBS the best jerkin & the best pair of breeches

To Thomas Gibbs the piece of cloth in my house to make him a pair of breeches with.  To William Gibbs 10s

To my son John Minchin one kettle, after the decease of his mother.  The rest to my beloved wife Alice Minchin, my sole executrix

[NB this will was so poorly spelt that sometimes it is difficult to ascertain what was actually meant, or the "correct" spelling of the names]

My body to be buried in the churchyard of Greens Norton.  To the repair of the same church 10s .  To the poor of Greens Norton 10s.  To the poor of Denncote 20s.  To the poor of Hepencote & Pallosspery" [Paulerspury] 40s.   My brother John HAYLL of "Heppencote" doth owe unto me fourscore pounds of the which debts I do give unto himself £20. Of the same debt I give £10 to Marie Haylle the daughter of the said John Hayll

To Thomas WACKFIELD [Wakefield?] the son in law of Gilles [Giles?] ROGERS, being my sister Elizabeth Rogers' son, 40s.  To William Wackfield the brother of the said Thomas Wackfield 40s.  To Elizabeth Rogers wife of the said Gilles Rogers £6.  To my brother John Newman of Towcester £6

To my sister Ane BURTE the wife of Thomas Burte 10s.  To Edward PAYNE my sister Alse NELSON's servant £4.   To John GUFFERYE my sister's other servant 10s. To James NEWBERY 10s.  To John HOPE of Greens Norton a bedstead. To my sister Hayll's eldest daughter [torn].  To Mary Hayll the daughter of the said John Hayll, my best "gonne" [gown].  To my goddaughter Sarye Hayll my best petticoat

To the said Edward Payne one pair of fine "flecxen" [flaxen] sheets.  The rest to Alse [Alice] Nelson sole executrix

Overseers John Hope and Edward Payne.  My sister Alse Nelson shall have the lease I have of my brother John Hayles of Heppencote for the assurance of the foresaid fourscore pounds , which my brother John Hayll owes me.    sign Sarye Newman.
