Greetings in our Savior's name:

In the second and third chapters of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, God is speaking to the seven churches of Asia Minor.  In the third chapter, verses 14-22, John writes about the Laodicean church - it was lukewarm, neither hot nor cold in its lifestyle and attitudes and was content with itself.

It is interesting to note that no commendation was given for the church's life of holiness and service.  There are times when we equate activity with spirituality.  But that is not always so.

God was not pleased with the church at Laodicea.  He went so far as to say in verse 16, "So, then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth." You know what you think when you get lukewarm coffee or food!  Please note that right on top of that statement God offers restitution to fellowship.

For many years verse 20 was often used to invite the sinner - a person who has never received Christ as their Savior and Lord - to do just that.  But, in context, the invitation is for delinquent church people.  God does not force anyone.

In the famous painting of Christ knocking on the door, you will notice that there is no door knob on the outside and a heart shape can faintly be seen over the length of the door.  Hence, the grace, patience and compassion of God makes available redemption when we repent of our sins - even for Christians!  Verse 20 says, "Behold, I stand at the door (of your heart) and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the the door (of their heart), I will come in to him and dine with him and he with Me."

This is part of the revival process in the church, and revival causes us to empty ourselves of all self-centeredness and give Christ the place of preeminence in all transactions:  our purpose, how we talk to each other and how concerned we are for the souls of the lost sinner.

The year 2000 was said to be the "Year of Jubilee" - did you miss it?  Christ is able to restore us to the JOY of our salvation.
