TEXAS
CATALYST
We have a unique situation in that we have a wide range of climatic conditions, garden and growing interests, and specialty concerns in Texas. My thoughts for this group is that I'd like an exchange of information on 'all things Texas'. I decided on the name Texas Catalyst because I would hope this would be a link you would first visit before making a purchase or if you have things to barter or ideas to discuss.
Basically, garden and farm related in general, but I don't want to limit it to that. (Kind of a MotherEarth TM or Organic Gardening for Texans) I believe in organic means, and am learning biodynamic applications, but if one wants to talk about ag-chem topics I'm not going to take them off-list. If you got a great deal on a new truck, tell the list members!
I'm sure that there are times when you said, "Oh, I wish I knew where there was x..... close by." Or, maybe wondering if the Antique Rose Emporium down in Independence is worth the trek to buy specialty plants. Is there somewhere closer? Where can I get those Aggie Maroon carrots, and why are they already pre-sliced? What will grow in my own back yard if I buy from the national catalog companies? Combined, the list-experience becomes hive-like, and is incredible in the wealth that can be shared.
I'm sure you've been on usegroups and understand how they work. Basic courtesy and manners apply to this list, refraining from lengthy re-quoting, if heated arguments develop, take them off list or I will. NO ATTACHMENTS. period. will get your posts sent to the listowner (myself) for editing and reluctant reprimand. Y2K topics are fine as long as they don't bury the whole list in the subject material. I realize there are lists created especially for this aspect, but w/in a year, they will have run their course.
I intend to develop lists from source material such as local plant and seed lists, handy veterinarian references, poultry and game bird sources, an ongoing hay supply list, and markets for product harvests, among other possibilities.
LINKS:
At first, I suspect the links pages will be more plentiful than the topics pages on this actual site. As the site grows, the links will be relegated to their own domain, constantly updating and growing. So, send in your web site addresses, comb through your bookmark files for anything 'TEXIAN', and send my way for additions to the links lists.
The first link goes back to my own webpages:
Flylo Farms "quietly breeding quality" Texas Oberhasli dairy since 1983
Now Paso Fino and Arabian horses also!! Oh, Llamas, Blue & Gold Macaws.. anyone I forgot?
Many Texas gardening questions will be answered on these pages, availability, types, hardiness, etc. Check here first!
Willhite
Seed Company, included here because this is one
of the older companies in Texas who deal in both hybrid and open pollinated
seed types for the home gardener as well as the commercial growers. We hope
they continue to educate and inform their customers about their products.
Texas Hay Producers This is a handy chart that references folk who have livestock hay for sale in all Texas counties. If you raise animals who rely on hay, it might be wise to bookmark this site in case your own suppliers can not meet your needs. (Note that late '98, this list was several pages full, as of 3/99, only a few have sent in to the current listing, expect it to grow as the weather and field conditions can be analyzed.)
