Arlington, Virginia

From Japan, we moved back to Arlington, Virginia, where we were raised in the shadow of Washington, D.C., one of my favorite places to this day. My mom took advantage of it, and we took a zillion "field trips" to all of the museums and monuments and patriotic events. Two more children, Patty and George, came along in quick succession, so that there were eight in the family that lived in this little house on George Mason Drive .

Easter morning, 1963.

Even as a very young child, I was quietly directing others.

And, yes, there is evidence that once upon a time I did eat bananas.

One of my favorite childhood memories is the week we spent each summer on Uncle Charlie's and Aunt Louise's farm in Northern Virginia - complete with hauling water up from the spring house, and hurried trips to the outhouse. Here is a rare picture of the whole family (taken about 1963), sitting on the porch steps of the farmhouse.

(The house was originally a log cabin built in the 1700's.

You can still see the logs on the inside.)
