BLACK MARKET IN FLORIDA
Many in the state of Florida took babies to NY City and substituted dead NYC babies' birth certificates. Some ran maternity homes and worked with doctors and lawyers who "sold" babies. Some doctors made the b.c. in the adoptive parents names and there was never a legal adoption at all. These practices occurred between 1924 and 1978.
Although Helen Tanos Hope was not "technically" in that category, many of her babies were sent out of state to be adopted. She has since died and a lot of her records have been lost or destroyed, but I recently received this message from a friend in Florida who read an article in the local paper and we want to relate it to you:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This message is for any birthparents and adoptees whose adoption was handled by Helen Tanos Hope in The Miami, Ft Lauderdale, central Florida areas.
In 1994 some of Helen Tanos Hopes records were discovered in a dumpster in Davie, Florida. Helen Tanos Hope died in 1994 and it seems a relative of hers decided to "get rid" of the files. A business man discovered the files and contacted the police and the records were retrieved. A Broward County Judge, Richard Liss has assigned another Atty. to take Helen Tanos Hopes files. Her name is Linda McIntyre, 98 S.E. 6 Ave. Delray Beach, Florida 33483. Phone 954-344-0990.

Non Identifying Information
This is a compilation of written and verbal information given to me by the adoption agency.
**Born "Baby Boy _____", on June 4, 1960 at 1:40 A.M. at Broward General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FLorida and was delivered by Dr. Kirkley
**My Birth Mother was 34 years old at the time of my birth. Her birth date is in October, 1925.
**She was 5' 7" tall, normal weight 140 pounds, had hazel eyes, long, naturally wavy brown hair and very fair skin. Her family was of English and Hungarian decent and of the Protestant faith. Her brother was a Reverend at a Broward County Church.
**She worked as a clerk-typist for a loan company in Ft. Lauderdale, where she met my birth father. I now know his name is Richard. He was the assistant manager and was married and the father of three children.
**She moved to a boarding home around the beginning of April 1960 and stayed there until I was born.
**On June 11, 1960, CHS filed a petition for custody in Broward County Juvenile Court at which time the "sign and surrender" or relinquishment order was signed by my birth mother.
**I was brought to Children's Home Society in Miami by caseworker, Bess Black and placed in the care of a Dade County foster home on June 9, 1960. From this point on the record refers to me as Robert Ted, but they called me "Ted."
**Finalization of Adoption took place on October 11, 1961 in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Dade County (Miami), by Judge Philip Goldman. The attorney for the petitioner was Edgar E. Cox, Jr. of Miami, Fl.My petition for a Court Order to open my records in Miami was denied for lack of "good cause." CHS wrote a "request for contact letter" to Richard on December 11, 1997. To my surprise, he called the case worker and left a phone number, however c.w. was unable to reach him at it. They wrote a second letter, which he never answered.
In order to find my bmom, CHS turned the search over to a wonderful PI/CI in Orlando and within ONE HOUR, she found my birth mother's address. (If anyone searching in Florida would like her name and address, just email me.) Because of FL law, she had to turn the info back to CHS. My case worker wrote a "contact" letter on Monday, Feb. 2 and called me on Friday, Feb 13, (VALENTINE'S DAY) with the news that she heard from my birth mother and she would like to meet her "only child."
We had our telephone reunion on February 19, 1998. The first thing she said to me was the agency told her she would NEVER meet me and was NOT ALLOWED to try to find me.
DON'T EVER GIVE UP!
REUNION UPDATE ONE YEAR LATER
We call each other twice a week and continue to send cards and letters. The down side of this reunion is that her family has not been supportive and she is ready to leave her entire life behind to move up and live with or near me. This is not what I counted on and am not interested in that kind of arrangement and have had to explain that to her several times.
All I can tell you all is to be careful what you wish for.....you may get it.
On her last visit, I got up the nerve to ask her my birth father's name. She told me without hesitation and my wife found his family. We have had contact with his brother who is a really nice person, but says my bdad doesn't remember Helen and will not discuss it. He had promised to answer my medical and background questions but then I never heard from him again.
