The female can be identified by the squarer lower jaw line. Other indicators, though not always accurate, include a shorter female banner, the angle that the banner is held and size of fish. The only certainty is that the male carries the brood of eggs in his mouth. At this time his head, mouth, below the jaw and gills will swell noticibly, usually overnight.
