Here is the whole story. Sunday night Paul and I were watching movies and I was starting to experience really bad back pain. The pain was so bad I would be in tears but then the back pain would let up a little so we could finish watching the movies. I made it through the night and called the doctor the nest morning and he asked me to come in to see him. When I went in on Monday he did a vaginal exam and said I was dilated to a 2 and wanted me to keep my apt. for Tuesday so he could check me again to see if I had dilated anymore in the mean time he prescribed some pain medicine for my back pain. That night the pain increased and the medicine was not working. It was so bad at around 10:00pm that we paged the doctor. He did not call back so we called the hospital they told me to take a warm bath. At this point the pain was severe and constant not letting up at all. The bath was no help and so I called the nurse at the hospital again and she said to come down. So Paul and I went down to the hospital and they put me in a Triage room to monitor the baby. At that point the nurse assumed what was happening was that the baby had dropped and was putting pressure on my spine and causing the back pain. She said she had experienced the same thing when she was pregnant with her first child. So at this point we were being led to beleive that she would move and release the pressure and we would continue to carry her till her due date. Well the severe pain was not letting up and I got sick I vomited a few times and finally the hospital got a hold of my doctor. His pager was not working. It was not good timing for his pager to go on the puts but things happen anyway he said to admit me and to give me something so that I could sleep. They put Paul and I in a room and gave me I think Morphine. Anyway it helped me relax enough to sleep but I could still feel the back pain it just was bearable now. The next morning my Dr. came in at 8:00am and he checked again I was still dilated between a 2-3cm but after discussing it with Paul and I he said we could induce the labor so with our consent he proceeded to break my water. When he broke my water they saw meconium in my fluid. Meconium is when the baby has made a bowl movement inside when the baby is in stress. All that meant is we would have a special neonatal team who would be present to suction her mouth and nose very well so she would not inhale the fluid. Then they started the Pitocin and scheduled me to receive the Epidural. All this happened and I was ready to push at around 2:00pm on March 16, 1999 anyway I started to push and we did that for about 30min the nurse became concerned that the baby was not taking pushing very well. Her heart beet was dropping when I would push during a contraction but then would recover to normal so no alarm bells went off but she still wanted the doctor to there. So when my Dr. came in he checked me again and he said that she was not far enough down to use forceps and that she was facing posterior meaning that her biggest part of her head was trying to come out first and not the smallest. At that point he decided the best thing was to take her out with a C-section. So off we went to the surgery room and while they were prepping me for surgery she was fine they had a baby heart beet so when they started the surgery they have to take the monitor off and from there we have no idea when she lost a heart beat. When they pulled her out I could see the neonatal team working on her and rubbing her down like they would a healthy baby and she was not responding to the rub down. She was blue and not crying or moving. I then saw then start CPR but she was not responding and they wheeled her out of the room. My surgery continued and after surgery they took me to the recovery room where my Dad and stepmom and Paul's mom and Paul met me. They offered to bring her to me. I said yes and I got to hold her while. She was beautiful and big 9lbs and 9ozs and measured 20.5in. Anyway no one knew at the time how this happened and the autopsy revealed nothing wrong, she was healthy and the placenta healthy so the doctor is saying that the cord must have been pinched to cut off her blood supply during the surgery to make her heart stop. She will always be in our forever longing hearts. |
