Thomas Smiley

In the 1870 census, Thomas Smiley was living at 1612 South Street Thomas was born in Ireland about 1820. His wife Isabella was born in Ireland about 1830. Thomas apparently operated a hardware store at this location for over 20 years.

Also living with them was a son John born about 1850; a son Thomas born about 1852; a son Will born about 1853; a daughter Martha born about 1855; a son Robert born about 1857; a son Albert born about 1859; and a son George born about 1864. All the children were born in Pennsylvania

The census also had two boarders living with them. Jane Holley a millener born about 1825 and Jane Holley (her daughter?) born about 1862

In the 1880 census a change has apparently taken place in Thomas' life. It appears that he has a new wife (I cannot read her name) who was born about 1842 in Ireland. His age has changed so that he now claims to have been born about 1824.

His son William is a letter carrier at 26 years old.

His son Robert is a correspondent at 22 years old.

He has a son David (not on the 1870 census) born about 1866 and a daughter Ida born about 1872.
