"Surfing" your way to Page County genealogical research

Article of January 8, 1998

Ah yes, we're slowly becoming serious "netizens" on the "Web" these days. When it comes to the internet for some basic genealogy research there are boundless possibilities. For Page County there are currently three major sites that are a beneficial to the new or experienced genealogy researcher.

The first reviewed Web Page is a part of the Virginia Genealogical Web Project or Va GenWeb for short. As a part of the VaGenWeb, this Page County site is maintained by Todd White. Like all sites listed in this review, this site is not commercial in nature and genealogy information found on these pages is freely available to the public; but like books, the sites are copyrighted. The Va GenWeb Page County site is a great reference point for checking various queries or the surname listing. Queries contained on the web page consist of other "netizens" who leave behind a particular surname or surnames with vital information in the hope that others might also be researching the same person. In the case that there might be information to share between one another, e-mail addresses are left behind so that a rapid exchange of information may take place. Likewise, various persons throughout the county and the country have been listed for voluntary look-ups of Page County ancestors. While at the site, be sure to click on the various links of Page County genealogy interests including, but not limited to, links to the "e-zine" entitled Oh Shenandoah! Country Rag and the Shenandoah Directory which lists various people in the Shenandoah Valley who are also on-line. Future growth and various upgrades are soon expected for the web page. The site can be found at: http://www.oocities.org/Heartland/2521/page.htm.

Once you've tapped into the first page, press on to the home page of the Genealogical Society of Page County. Maintained by Teresa Kelley and as a part of the "RootsWeb", this page is a definite contribution to Page County research on-line. This page gives a bountiful harvest when it comes to Page County genealogy research. While always being improved this page is a whopper including Bible records, cemetery information, local church history, mortality schedules, a Civil War diary of a Page County Confederate veteran, post office and towns and their name origins, etc.

Like the Va GenWeb Page County site, it too has a list of queries and a surname listing that gives member e-mail addresses and the surnames they are researching. In the future we can expect to see more Bible records, Voter Registrations for 1903 - 1908 and much more. Without a doubt, no Page County researcher should leave these pages unturned. This site can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vagspc/pcgs.htm.

Finally, we come to web page number three. In searching for my own Page County Confederate ancestors I struggled through many trips to Richmond to finally obtain all of the information necessary to quench the ever growing thirst for more knowledge. So that others would not have to go to such great lengths I created the Master Web Page of Confederate Units Formed in Page County. If your looking for a Confederate ancestor that served in a Page County unit or your ancestor served in another unit and resided in Page before or after the war, then this is your best cross-reference yet. While still under construction, the site will ultimately be provided with a multitude of links and other features that will benefit the Confederate ancestor researcher. The site can be accessed at: http://www.oocities.org/Heartland/Hills/1850/pagecoconfeds.html
