Husband's NotesJohn Sellman was born in England (probably in Shropshire) ca. 1645-1650; he immigrated to America and settled in Calvert County, Maryland, in or about 1658, where he resided until his death, which occured on or about October 18, 1707. John Sellman was probably a youth of twelve or thirteen years of age when he arrived in Calvert County, Maryland. He entered the colony as a "custom servant", and seems to have been so employed for a term of ten to twelve years. At the end of that period he obtained his release, and, according to the practice of that time, probably received various articles of wearing appearel, a few farm tools and some seed corn. He also received from the Lord Proprietor two warrants each for fifty acres of land. As his land holdings expanded John Sellman had many "custom servants" and "indentured servants" laboring in his fields and performing various duties about his household. The will of John Sellman was drawn July 18, 1707, and proved February 28, 1707/08 in Anne Arundel County. The original document, yellowed with age, is preserved at the Hall of Records, Annapolis.
Notes for Child: William SellmanWilliam Sellman after his marriage at All Hallows Church to Ann (West) Sparrow, took up residence at "Sparrow's Rest" on Rhodes River, Anne Arundel County. In or about 1729, William and Ann moved to the adjoining plantation of 360 acres called "Shaws Folly" which with "Francis Addition" (42 acres), he had purchased from John Gresham. On this estate William Sellman built in 1735 a brick house, which was later enlarged, is still standing, and is known as "Woodlawn". At the time of his death William Sellman possesed 1373 acres of land, 31 negro slaves, 21 horses, 119 head of cattle, 108 sheep and 19 hogs, plus a large inventory of farm equipment, stores of food and household goods.![]()
