Husband's Notes
Listed as head of household #56 56 on the 1850 Census of Greenup Precinct, Cumberland County, Illinois. Name on Census is spelled Coal. Same record documents Andrew & Susan's year and place of birth as well as of their children Simon, Phebe, William and David. Not found on the 1860 census so presumed dead. The folllowing letter, written by Susan "Ella" (Cole) Hazelton to her son Walter Hazelton, provides some details about Andrew and his family. It was submitted by Ray and Anna (Cole) Kelly. The letter reads as follows: I do not know much of my fathers people as my father died soon after he came home from the Civil War. My grandparents came to Illinois from Fairfield, Ohio, Darke County. There were I believe three brothers of my grandfathers family. I do not remember any sisters unless it was Mrs. Sally Snider. My own father had two brothers David and William and a sister Phebe. She burned to death in a fire in Mattoon Illinois at the age of 18. Mary E. Cole Dorssey and Rebecca Cole Shesser are cousins of my father... My grandparents are buried in Paul graveyard south east of Greenup Illinois. I've even forgot their names seems grandfathers was Andrew or Andy and her name was Susan or Catherine or Katy. I'm not sure Susan. Mary E. Cole Dorssey father was Jerry Cole. My father called Mrs. William House Aunt Nancy and Mrs. Dean Aunt Katy. Mrs. House was a Welchinner and Mrs. Jacob Snider (Aunt Sally) I do not know if his mother was the sister or not or if they were related to his father.
