[UL:Obit of Rev Ephraim Shuey:UL] Rev. Ephraim Shuey, father of Mr. O.J. Collins of this place, was born in Virginia, January 8, 1814, and died at his home in Jasper County, Illinois, January 24, 1897, aged 83 years and 16 days. He was married in 1835 to Matilda Grass, in Vigo county, Indiana. They came to Illinois about 1848 and lived a short time in Clark County, then moved to Cumberland county, four miles West of Casey, where they resided till 1862 when the two oldest sons gave themselves to the service of their country and the family moved to Westfield. In 1868 they returned to the farm near Casey where they resided till 1871, where the mother died in great peace, leaving a bright testimony behind that her future was eternal bliss. There were born to them seven children, five sons and two daughters; one son died in infancy and one daughter, Louisa a number of years after marriage leaving a husband and three children. The other five children - J.F.Shuey, of Argenta,Ill.; W.H. Shuey , of Effingham, Ill; W.S. Shuey of Greenup, Ill; Mrs. J.O. Collins of San Jose, Ill; and Ezra Shuey of Emporia, Kansas, are still living and were present, except for the last named, at the funeral which took place from the United Bretheren church at Casey, and the remains were laid by the side of the wife and mother in the Casey cemetary. He had three brothers and five sisters. One brother and one sister are still living. There are living twenty five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was married a second time to Rebecca Hammer in 1873 and the greater part of that time since has lived on the farm in Jasper county where he died. His fatal illness commenced about two years ago,in the form of a cancer on his face from which he suffered intensely in the last year. Rev. Shuey was converted at the age of sixteen and united with the United Bretheren Church. He was licensed to preach at the age of twenty-two. He was first a member of the Wabash conferance, then a charter member of the Lower Wabash Conferance, of which charter members there are left but three. He was in the ministry sixty-one years and pastor in charge of a circuit for about twenty years, and a member of the Church sixty-seven years. He from his youth was a devoted Christian and in his severe and continued illnesshis faith did not fail fim. He was confident in God, and in a service held in his home a few Sundays before his death, conducted at his request, by his son-in-law, Rev J.O. Collins, assisted by Rev. Buckner, he expressed the strongest faith and assurance that all was well and he was ready, yea anxious to be at rest. He took each one present by the hand and requested they meet him in Glory. His case is truly a monument of the sustaining Grace of God, in a long life and in severe suffering. His death when it came was easy and peaceful, and truly may we say, "he is at rest." By Rev Shuey himself. 1830. Recieved my license to preach Sept 21, 1836 in Fountain Co., Ind at the house of Wm. Hoobler brother to Rev. John Hoobler, Henry Kumler, sr. and Wm. Brown, bishops. I received my ordination license Sept. 7, 1839, Henry Kumbler, sr., bishop. I don't remember just how many years I travelled the circuits, somewhere between fifteen and twenty years. The first circuit or mission rather I travelled in connection with James Davis. He was a good man and now in Heaven. The circuit extended from New Goshen, Ind to 15 miles North of Danville, Illinois. The travel was 150 miles or more around it; received as salary 50 or 60 dollars. I can not now recall to mind all the different work I travelled but remember very distinctly that my salary was never more that 100 dollars except 4 or 5 years. But somehow I got through and lived all the same. I joined the Wabash Conferance before it was divided; at the division I fell to the "Lower Wabash" W.C. Smith and I are the oldest members of this conferance. While looking over my past history I can see very many mistakes that I have made; yet I cannot say that I desire to live life over. While looking over the past it seems a long and tedious journey. My life in many respects has been pleasant. I can truly say the Lord has been very good and now that I am going down on the other side of the hill he is more precious than ever. E. Shuey. He embraced religion when a young man and joined the United Bretherin church. He married Matilda A. Grass, also from Virginia on Dec 10, 1835 and had seven children; James F., born Oct 2, 1837, Louisa Ann, born Sept 27,1839, John Robert, born Sept. 14,1841, Ephraim Ezra, born July 27, 1844, Martha Almaretta, born Dec. 24, 1846, William Henry, born Dec. 5,1850, Walton Smith, born March 30, 1853. Ephraim was a minister in the U.B. church over 50 years and lived in various parts of Jasper, Cumberland, Clark and Crawford counties. He died Jan 24, 1897 and Matilda died September 16,1871. Grass, December 10th, 1835 and has seven children, viz: James, Louisa, John, Ephraim, Martha, William and Walton. He married his wife in Indiana, but she had also come from Virginia. She died Sept 16th 1871. He afterwards married Rebecca A. Hammer, widow of D. Hammer, and daughter of D. Fawcett. He is a minister of the United Brethern Church and lives at New Hebron, Crawford county, Illinois. His life and ministrations have been useful to him and to others, and in his humble wayhas sought to do what he could do in his Master's kingdom.

[UL:The Religious Telescope, December 20, 1871:UL] Matilda A. Shuey, wife of Rev. Ephraim Shuey, of the Lower Wabash Conferance, died Sept. 16th, 1871, aged 53 years, 3 months, and 29 days. At the early age of fourteen years Sister Shuey sought and obtained and interest in the atoning blood of the Saviour, and joined the United Bretheren Church of which she lived a useful and beloved member until her death. Her sufferings, which were protracted and severe, she bore with Christian resignation, and her end was triumphant. She leaves an interesting and intelligent family, most of which are striving for the better land. May God bless all of them and grant them a reunion in Heaven. J.W. Nye.
