Notes for Child: Robert Sedgwick
[UL:FROM THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY HISTORY:UL] SEDGWICK, ROBERT (b. 9 May 1809-d. 23 May 1874) son of John and Ann Sedgwick, and his wife Mary Ann (Selwood) Sedgwick (b. 12 Nov 1819-d. 25 Oct 1900) daughter of Henry and Nancy Selwood, came to Illinois from Indiana with their family in the late 1850's. They entered 80 acres of land in 1859 in Crooked Creek Township, Cumberland Co. located on the county line between Cumberland and Clark Co's. They were the parents of 11 children. James b. 19 Nov. 1841; Sarah b. 8 Feb. 1843; Effa Jane b. 5 Nov. 1844; Robert b. 1 Mar. 1846; Thomas Henry b. 17 Nov. 1849; William b. 11 Aug. 1850; Gideon b. 21 Jan 1851; Margaret Ann b. 18 July 1854; Mathew b. 1 Oct. 1856; John Wesley b. 4 Feb. 1859, died 7 Sept 1875; and Mary Olive b. 10 Aug. 1864. Data is not available on all the children. James the oldest perhaps married an Alumbaugh and is proginator of the Sedgwicks still in the county. Mathew and possibly one or two of the other sons went to Whitt, Jasper Co., Texas in the latter part of the 1800's. The four daughters married and died each leaving a child. William Sedgwick the middle child never married but looked after the family when the father died in 1874. William and his mother took the children of the sisters children and raised them and he cared for his mother until her death in 1900. The sisters were Sarah, married to Rev. Johnathon Groves and left son Ardie Groves. Effa Jane married (first name unknown) Mullen and left son Howard Mullen. Margaret Ann married John England Sharp and left son John England Sharp Jr. Mary Olive the youngest child married Thomas Hardin and left daughter Rosie. Not much is known about the life of Robert Sedgwick. William Sedgwick was a farmer and hay buyer. He operated the farm his father had entered in 1859. At the death of William Sedgwick the land went to John England Sharp Jr. grandson of Robert Sedgwick and is now operated by his son Ralph England Sharp. The farm has been owned by the family for over 100 years. Robert and Mary Ann Sedgwick are buried in Washington cemetary as is William Sedgwick who died in 1934.
