Colonel John Clayton died at his Estate, Windsor, in his eighty-eighth year and was buried there. In a lengthy will made on the 29th day of October 1773 and proved at Gloucester Court on the 6th day of January 1774, John Clayton made provision for the division of his estate and named many of his heirs, as to Thomas Hughes; to grandson Thomas Hughes; to grandson Jasper Hughes; to daughter Lucy Hughes.

Lucy Clayton, daughter of John Clayton, married Henry Hughes of Gloucester County. They were the parents of Jasper Hughes, Thomas Hughes named in their grandfathers will. Lucy Clayton married first Mr. Livingston and second Henry Hughes. There were no children by the first marriage, but in addition to the sons mentioned in John Claytons will, Jasper and Thomas Hughes, there were Henry Hughes, William Clayton Hughes and Susanna Hughes.
