Archelous Hughes settled in the western part of Pittsylvania that later became Patrick County. He married Mary, daughter of Samuel Dalton, and had issue: Leander, Archelous, William, Jane, John, Samuel, Reuben, Nancy, Madison Redd, Sally, who married Col. Joe Martin, Matilda who married General John Dillard.

Col. John E. Hughes was the son of Mr. John Hughes and his wife, Bettie Clark, daughter of John A. Clark of "Pineville". He entered the tobacco business at an early age and by his industry and wise judgment amassed a large fortune. Besides founding an orphanage, Col. Hughes left a large bequest to the Danville Hospital.
