Genealogical Comments and additions for pt 1

My ancestor is Lydia Embree, d/o John Embree and Mary ___, b. 2/10/1759, Bush River, S.C., d. 2/27/1802, McDuffie GA - She married Abiathar Davis - she did not marry Joseph Coate - there son, John Davis and his first marriage were the ancestors of Herbert Hoover - I am descended through John Davis and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Haworth, so Herbert Hoover is a 1/2 cousin to me. - maybe there was another Lydia (Embree) Davis, but I doubt it during this time period....

I am seaching for a Samuel Coate, d. 1807, in Newberry Co, SC, who
married Mary Worthington, dau. of Sam. Worthington, another Quaker line
from Philadelphia via. Fredericksburg Co., VA. I can not identify the
parents of Samuel, but he definitely is not a son of Marmaduke. Suspect
he is a son of Henry Coate, who was also in Newberry.

With apologies to Mr. Mendenhall, the Coate, Pole and Coppock family lines go as follows as best I can determine (please see end-note sources). Pole being my primary line:
Marmaduke Coate married Mary. Marmaduke died @ 1662. They had at least one son, Henry. (1)
Henry Coate married (wife's name not known). They had at least two sons: John and Marmaduke born between 1616 and 1620 at Curry-Rivel, Somersetshire, England. There was probably another brother, Joseph. (1) (2)
This Marmaduke, son of Henry, died 1689, Somersetshire, England. He married Edith Fell-Satterwhaite or Maxwellton "of Hambridge" @ 1650. (2) It is likely that land in Hambridge that was an inheritance later in the Pole line originally belonged in Edith's family. Edith died in 1718. They were early Quakers and suffered many times for the faith. They had at least a daughter Edith, and a son Marmaduke born 1652. Kingsbury Meeting, Somersetshire, lists Hannah born 1667-6-12; Ann born 1669-8-30; William born 1671-1-6, all children of Marmaduke and Edith Coate. Also listed is John 1665-9-6; Henry 1667-7-27; James 1668-12-4; Samuel 1670-11-10 and Elizabeth 1672-9-13 all children of John and Elizabeth Coate. (7)
This Marmaduke, son of Marmaduke and Edith, was born in 1652, married Ann Pole, daughter of Edward and Mary Pole of Battlehey, Wiveliscombe, Somersetshire, England, in the early 1700s.(2) Marmaduke and Ann Pole Coate came to the United States and settled at Burlington, New Jersey. They were both members of the meeting of ministers and elders. "He was an elder, and she either stood in that capacity, or in that of a minister." (2) Their deaths are recorded at Burlington Monthly Meeting, Burlington, New Jersey. "Marmaduke Coate, Departed this life the sixteenth day of the twelveth mo 1728 Between ye first and second hour in ye Morning it being the first day of the week and was Buried in Friends Burying Ground in Burlington ye third day following." and "Anne Coate, The wife of ye forenamed Marmaduke Coate departed this life ye fourth day of ye eleventh month 1729/30 between the fourth and fifth hour in ye evening being ye first day of the week and was buried in Burlington by her husband ye third day following." (3) (4) Marmaduke and Ann Pole Coate had at least four children: William who married Rebecca Sharpe on 6 February 1727, Mary who married Caleb Raper, Edith who married Thomas Newbold, and Hannah who married Isaac Cooper.
William and Rebecca Sharpe Coate married 6 February 1727 in New Jersey. They had at least ten children: Anna, Marmaduke who was born 1738 in Newberry, South Carolina, and married Mary Coppock in 1754; William Jr., Israel, Barzillai who married Elizabeth Stokes 13 April or Jun 1768. Barzillai died 22 Feb 1784;
Hannah, Rachel who married Joseph Burr in 1770; Mary born 16 May 1739 who married Joseph Ridgway; Beulah who married John Ridgway and Edith. (1)
Marmaduke son of William and Rebecca Sharpe Coate, was born in 1738 in Newberry, SC, and married Mary Coppock daughter of Moses and Martha Lester Coppock in 1754 in South Carolina. Mary died in 1833 and was buried in Union Cemetery, NE Ludlow Falls, Miami County, Ohio. Their children are: Stephen born 1756 in SC; Susanna born 1758 in SC; Estella born 1762 in SC; Esther born and died 28 April 1764 in SC; Esther born 3 SEpt 1766 in SC and died 1808; Moses born 5 Sept 1768 in SC; Henry born 18 Aug 1770 in SC and died 24 Nov 1848 in Miami County, Ohio; Samuel born 28 Aug 1772 in SC; Sarah born 11 Dec 1774, Bush River, SC; James born 23 Jun 1777; William born Bush River, SC; John born 19 July 1785 in SC and died 7 Aug 1837; and Jesse born 3 Jan 1788 in SC and died 8 July 1837. (5) There is a picture of Marmaduke Coate (1738-1822) "Pioneer Quaker in Miami County, Ohio. He donated the original property for Union (Ludlow Falls) Meeting." (6)
There are alot of Coate and Coppock families in the Miami Valley of Ohio Records. If anyone desires the POLE family information, I'd be happy to share with them. The Pole family were early Quakers in Somersetshire. John Pole came to the US in 1734 and married Rachel Smith at Burlington Monthly Meeting in 1735. She was the eldest child and only daughter of Richard Smith of Bramham, Yorkshire, and Anna Marshal of Philadelphia. This line includes: Pole, Jones, Coate, Barrett, Young, Duck, Wedmore in England; Smith, Marshal, Warner, Bringhurst, Wetherill, Logan, Murfin, Callander, etc. all Quakers, in United States from 1680s on. Later lines: Volmer, Watson, Trump, Prickett, Senff, Wilson, Wood. The Burlington, New Jersey, Smith line is traced back to @1590 ("The Burlington Smiths, A Family History", by Richard Morris Smith, pub. 1877, and Burlington MM Records; Quaker MM Records in England).
I would be glad to hear from any associated lines. I would especially like to hear from the Coate/Coppock researchers who contacted me previously. Your copies are ready...if I only had your addresses! I am Nancy at GKapper@aol.com.

He seems accurate, until he brings in other's research verbatim and then it is really jumbled. Example: Our common Marmaduke (173?-1822) whom he calls Marmaduke III is absolutely not descended from Marmaduke and Ann Pole Coate. They had one son named William who had multiple sons, but all of them except perhaps Barzilla died before having any children as stated clearly in a first hand deed record at that time between William's daughters and his son Barzilla. I just had someone write who says they have a newspaper article at the death of our Marmaduke that states he was the son of Henry and Esther Wilson Coate. . .

In 1695 Aaron was fined 1 lb for failure to tithe to the Church of England. He paid the fine in corn. Also in 1691 his first son Aron was born and died and was buried in the Anglican Church graveyard. As you know the other two were buried in the Quaker Burial Ground. The John that you listed as A married Susan Lowe. If I am remembering correctly John, father of Aaron is shown as being married to a Yarwood. In The Church of England, Diocese of Chester records, ref # 65:27 John Coppock of Mobberley, age 26 married Susan Lowe, Spinister age 30 on June 4, 1662 by Rev. Robert Hunter Clerk and Minister of Knutsford.

One of my dead ends is IDA PEMBERTON, born about 1855, probably
Indiana, married ISAAC ALBERT BATES, and was the mother of Beatrice
Bates, born August 2, 1885. Info from the family, with not much info
given for research. Thanks for any information. Especially all that
good info from the Coppocks. This line is my Granddaughter's line.
She is a Coppock.

I think the Charity, minister, who travelled abroad was Charity Wright Cook, grandmother of Charity Hollingsworth. Charity Cook and her sister, Susannah Wright Hollingsworth, both travelled extensively to preach and were revered ministers. I think they have been confused with Charity and susannah Hollingsworth, daus of Sarah Cook. I am not absolutely positive of this because the junior Charity and susannah may well have travelled also but this is the first time I've seen it alluded to that they did.
Also I am curious about the marriage of Elisha McCool's father Thomas who m. Mary Thompson. I have a first marriage for him but have never found out who she was. I am fairly certain he mou Bush River before 1804 (Thomas, that is). I found a court document where he was involved with a Dinsmore family in Clinton Co., Oh. and the jist of it seem to suggest that he was at that time married to Hannah Dinsmore. I know this isn't your line but if you come across anything.... I haven't found very much in Hinshaw on the younger MCCools. And those Haworths--would I ever like to get them sorted out!!!!

They had child, Lydia E. DAVIS that married her 2nd cousin Aaron COPPOCK

Nathaniel Haworth and Hannah Barrett had child James Haworth. b. 2/1775, he married Anna Coppock. They had child Elizabeth Haworth b. 6/18/1800, Yadkin River, N.C. Elizabeth Haworth.married three times. The first was to William Elleman. The second was to John Davis (my ancestor). The third was to ____Jones. The Elizabeth Haworth above is not the child of Nathaniel and Hannah (Barrett) Haworth, but the child of their son, James and Anna (Coppock) Haworth. This is not to say that Nathaniel Haworth and Hannah did not have a child, that may have been named Elizabeth, but the birth date and marriage mentioned are for my ancestor, Elizabeth Haworth d/o James and Anna (Coppock) Haworth.
Cynthia Drayer cimbid@aol.com

There are many, many Coate, Coates or Coats descendants and many were named John or William, which makes things more confusing. I know there is a disagreement about the father of Elisha McCool,as it was not Thomas McCool, but Gabriel McCool. My own ancestor, Hester Coats who married James McCool had 3 brothers listed on the census: John, William and Thomas.
