Jacob Beckleheimer

Jacob Beckleheimer b. 20 Aug 176? d. ? is believed to be a son of Abraham Picklesimer, Sr. and Christena ?.

There were two Jacobs in Botetourt County, the younger of the two was Jacob that married Christenah son of Abraham and Christenah. He always wrote in English while the older Jacob scribed in German. The younger was born between 1760-1765. The elder of the two Jacob's is believed to be the brother to Abraham.

1785 tax list, Botetourt County, VA names the younger Jacob and Daniel (for more on Daniel see the Northern Kentucky/Central Kentucky section)as members of Abraham's household.

Jacob purchased 170 acres of land on Brush Creek from Abraham and his wife Christena on December 1, 1797 for a mere amount of five pounds.. Also mentioned in this deed is Isaac Becklehimer. The deed said "Examined and delivered to Isaac Becklehimer per order".

One of the males in the 0-10 category could be Levi Becklehimer, his birth date is approximated between 1810 and 1814, I don't believe that Levi is one of the children in this census. This does not mean that he couldn't have been born in 1810, but I believe his birth happened after the census. The male listed in the 16-26 category is Isaac Becklehimer. Abraham Sr. could have been one of the males listed in the 45& Up category, with Jacob being the other.

April 1, 1812, Isaac Picklehimer married Roseanna Ferguson, daughter of Robert Ferguson.

Roseanna Ferguson is believed to be the sister of Artissima Ferguson who marries (although no marriage record has been found to date) Levi Becklehimer.

1818 - Records of the Second Battalion, 75th Regiment of the Virginia Militia show fines assessed against a member of Captain Barber Miller's Company for missing muster "without leave or legitimate excuse".

August Muster - Isaac Beckelhimer - fined $1.70
October Muster - Isaac Pickelsimer - fined $1.00
Batt. Muster - Isaac Picklesimer - fined $2.00

After each muster, a list of absentees was submitted to the Batallion Commander who then assessed fines. The following certification was attached to the lists:

"The lists being all examined and the fines assessed as the law directs.

(Signed) Walter Crockett, Major
2nd Bat., 75th Regt."

These three listings all represent Isaac Becklehimer son of Jacob.

In the 1820 US Census Jacob has 1 male listed in the 0-10 category. This would have to have been Levi. Levi was the youngest son of Jacob. He has two females in the same category. 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 1 male 1 female 16-25. Isaac is not a member of Jacob's household as he was listed as head of his own household.

In the 1830 Census Jacob has 1 male 15-20 which would have to be Levi. He has listed 2 females 5-10. Who are they? Christenah is not listed in Jacob's household. Christenah born in 1768 according to a German Bible in the possession of Hines Becklehimer (youngest son of Levi). In the 1820 census she would have been 52 years old. So it is probable that she died sometime between 1820 and 1830.

In the 1840 Census Jacob is listed as having 1 male 0-5, 2 females 20-30, 1 male 70-80.

Christena is also not mentioned in the deed dated September 7, 1841, when Jacob gifted land to his son Levi. Jacob states in the deed that Levi is his son.

Jacob is not found in the 1850 census, so it could be assumed he died sometime between September 1841 - 1850.

Their is still a need for substantial research on this line. I have put forth most of what I know about Jacob. I have obtained this from actual documents, documents sent to me by other members of the group, Smith-Riffe Collection, census, and last but by no means least, The Picklesimers of Eastern Kentucky, Ancestors and Kin, Volume I by John Wayne Picklesimer and John Walter Picklesimer.
