This page is a guide to buying, planting, and the care of trees.

Purchasing

Trees come in 20,000 kinds, from desert palms to river birches, to mountain pines
The trick is to select a tree with the size, shape, color, growth habit and cultural
requirements that are right for your garden.
What do you want from a tree? Shade in summer or color in autumn?
A hard-working windbreak or an easy-care foundation planting? Choose a species
that meets your needs instead of forcing one into a role that doesn't suit it. Know your
trees needs for light, soil and moisture and its tolerance of cold, heat, wind, pests and diseases.
Make sure it will thrive in your garden before purchasing.
Always consider a tree's ultimate height and spread. And don't forget its root mass, which
can reach three times the size of the canopy. Before bringing that sweet little sapling home
from the nursery, select a spot where it can develop without encroaching on power lines,
buildings, driveways or walkways.
