McGIBONEY

William McGiboney (I) - Born 1767, married 1792, died summer of 1841 Greene Cty., GA. Wife's name was Nancy Cone mentioned in the administration of his estate. She was born in 1776 (died age 74 as given in Mortality Schedule for 1850-F/GA/FEB). HELP! I have no burial location for them, nor do I have any info. prior to their Georgia residence.

Among the earliest records is one showing William on the Grand Jury for 1790, Greene Cty. The only other McGiboney shown in this area at this time was John McGiboney (sometimes spelled Gibney) who was a purchaser at the sale of John Morrow Dec. 13, 1790, witnessed a deed for Joseph Williams to Thomas Daniels in 1791, and owing money to the estate of William Bomer in 1792.

By 1795-1798, William and John McGiboney are listed on Tax Records for Oglethorpe Cty., GA but also owning land in Greene Cty. The county lines seem to have been temporarily changed for the era; because later records show them in Greene Cty. John McGiboney was one of the appraisers of the estate of James Hall, March 3, 1799.

Both William and John (Gibney) are listed in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery (registered 1802-03). They were both Justices of Peace in Greene in 1806. This is the last record found for John McGiboney in Greene Cty., GA. There are also records of a Mr. Erasmus McGiboney, who was named in William's will, but we don't know how Erasmus was related.

William & Nancy McGiboney lived on Shoulderbone Creek near the community of White Plains. William bought land from David Patillo, Nov. 16, 1801 and James Cone (believed to be Nancy's Father) May 20, 1802. There are other records of land transactions that mention names: Davis, Caldwell, Alexander, Wright, Greer, Cain, Livingston, King, Curry. William was Legal Admin. For estate of Thomas Knowles (dec'd of Hancock Cty) and advertised the sale of Knowles' 144 acres. Land was sold at "Public Outcry" on 1st Tuesday of Sept., 1828 in Greensboro for $616.00.

Nancy McGiboney is listed as a Charter Member of the White Plains Methodist Church; their land was called White Plains, later sold. William officiated at the marriages of many Greene Cty. couples, called minister in some, as can be seen in the "History of Greene County" book.

His estate was administered by James Moore with Albert Simonton and Freeman Lewis as Securities. Several of their children were deceased by the time of Nancy's death. Her estate was left to daughter, Lucretia Mapp & grandson James E. Self (son of Matilda McGiboney-Knowles-Self & William Self) and grandchild of deceased daughter, Maria Veazey.
