EERO SAARINEN

AN EXAGGERATED CARICATURE OF A
FELLOW BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
CIRCA 1929

All In Fun, Of Course!

Acclaimed for his designs of the GATEWAY ARCH in St. Louis, THE GENERAL MOTORS TECH CENTER at Warren, MI, the TWA TERMINAL in New York City and DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT near Washington, the late Eero Saarinen was an Internationally known architect.

However, few Birmingham residents are aware that he was once a student at Baldwin High School. Numerous drawings and linoleum block prints appearing in the school's yearbook, THE BALDWINIAN, published in the late 20's bear Saarinen's signature. An excellent 9th grade art student, his poster publicizing the future Birmingham Community House received honorable mention in a contest held prior to the building's construction.

As a teenager he undoubtedly had a sense of humor. The above caricature of a fellow student proves it. This Saarinen pencil sketch is pasted into the graduation scrapbook of 1929 Valedictorian Winifred Quarton.
