Michael Meily on 20 Apr 1852. If this marriage were the second one, her
name would be Mary Christman. The OH 1850 census has her listed as Mary
Rider, age 22, with her father, and there is also a Catherine, age 1

of Marion, OH is now located. (50 feet east of SR98 and 72 feet south of
CR 148, 75 acres)
Per History of Marion, 1907 (www.genweb.net/~leesue/MHF.html): "John
Fetter, father of Michael, was born in Germany, where he was reared and
learned the shoemaker's trade from his father. He was married to
Elizabeth Lynn in his native land and continued to work there for some
time at his trade, afterwards coming to this country with his wife and
one child. He first located in Marion, Ohio, and worked for about three
years at his trade and then bought a tract of 15 acres of timberland in
Richland township. At that time the township was still in an unsettled
condition although more thickly peopled than the country still farther
north. He continued to work at shoemaking until about 60 years of age,
after which he devoted his time exclusively to farming, having acquired a
little more land in the meantime. His death occurred May 17, 1899, at
the good old age of 81 years, 7 months and 3 days, his wife having died
some time previously. "

Orvie raised chickens as a hobby. He raised Hamburg, Rhoad Island Reds,
White Leghorns and Anacona breeds that took many prizes at poultry
shows.

were married anyway. Sarah and Edward moved to Dublin, OH soon after
marrying, but moved on to Union County after a short stay in Dublin.
Edward became a farmer, grain agent and store clerk. Moving again to
Marion, OH, Ed became a stone layer for his son-in-law, Orvie Noble.
Edward and Sarah lived at 544 East George St. in Marion until he returned
to farming during the depression years back in Union County.

know if she was married or not when she gave birth to her daughter,

born in Germany, were provided by Pat Gunderson. She had a man go over to the Evangelish (Lutheran) First
Reformed Church, in Huttengesass, Hessen-nassau, Prussia, Germany, and
film the entire church record. The information she sent was extracted
from the two rolls of microfilm that this man made for her. She also has
pictures of that area, old castles, etc., taken by him. I am trying to
get copies of the original church records from the microfilm she has. But
she said she lost one roll of the microfilm. I am hoping she made paper
copies of both microfilms before she lost one of them.

owner and operator of a fine farm of 101 acres located in Section 5,
Richland township, was born in Marion, Ohio, Dec. 17, 1849, and is a son
of John and Elizabeth (Lynn) Fetter and a grandson of John Fetter, Sr.
Michael was a small child when his parents moved to the farm in Richland
township, where he was reared, assisting in the work on the farm and
enduring many of the hardships incidental to pioneer times. After
reaching maturity, he worked out by the month for seven years, for the
first two years for Jacob Mautz. After his marriage he rented a farm in
Waldo township for five years and then purchased of George Dietsch his
first farm, a tract of 30 acres situated in Richland township, which he
afterwards sold, buying his present farm, a well-cultivated tract of land
located on the old "Mud Pike", which was the first road built through the
township. His barn which is one of the largest in this section of the
county, stands prominently on the road bearing his name. The large frame
house on the farm was erected by Mr. Fetter in 1886. He bought his land
in three different tracts; he first purchased 41 acres from Mrs. Kline in
1886; then he bought 23 acres across the road from William Coul in 1893,
and in 1901 added 36 1/2 acres, which he bought from Geo. Epply. On Nov.
22, 1871, Michael was united in marriage with Catherine Christman, the
only child and daughter of Frederick and Mary (Rider) Christman. Mrs.
Fetter's father, who was a native of German, came to this country when a
young man and located in Ohio. He was killed by lightning when his
daughter was a little girl and his widow subsequently married Michael
Meiley, by which marriage she had six children, ......."
"Mr. Fetter has always farmed and is one of the most prosperous
representatives of the calling in his section. For about two years he
and John Roush owned a threshing machine which they operated throughout
the country; finally, two of his sons Charles and Albert, bought out Mr.
Rousch's interest and in 1905 bought an outfit of their own, in which
business they have the assistance of the brother George, who is a
carpenter by trade. Mr. Fetter has seven head of horses and has his farm
well equipped with all kinds of modern machines and implements. He is a
Democrat in politics, as was his father and other members of his family.
He has been a member of the Lutheran Church since 17 years of age and is
at present a trustee of his church."

In Marion Memories, dated Nov 1991, Page 34, published by the Marion
County Genealogical Society, was a listing showing Adam Rider being
appointed guardian over nine year old, Minnie Kilper? Immediately after
her age is Oct 1, 1859, and is probably the date the guardian was
appointed. Posting $1200 bond were August Rider (not our August Rider) &
George Burchartt. {Per Larry G Welch trip to the Family History Library

In book US/Can 977.1514 P28m, Marion County Ohio Court Records, in the
section, bond book for 1852 - 1874, page 49, has Adam Rider, on 18 Oct
1859, appointed guardian of John Phillips and August Phillips, with
Augustus Rider & George Merchant, sureties, posting $400 bond each for
each child. Adam, on 18 Oct 1859, was appointed guardian of Catharine
Phillips, with August Rider & George Reicharett, sureties, posting $400
bond each. Denise said these are three of the children of Nicholas and
Henrietta Philippi, and a possible reason could be that Henrietta died
and Nicholas could not care for them. {Per LW trip to the

Information per IGI Addendum CD August 1997, version 2, disc 11. Source
is FHC microfilm 1,903,954 and 1,903,897. Per LW visit to
Langley FHC in Tucson AZ, on 3 Jun 1998.
He is not on the 1900 Soundex for Ohio, for R360 (Rider), under Adam,
however, his wife Elizabeth is. Plus, the 1900 census shows that
Elizabeth is a widow, but they were married 43 years.
The passenger list of Baltimore, MD, on 6 Jul 1838.

sincerely & truly swear that the annexed list sub scribed with my Name,
contains to the best of my knowledge & belief, a just & true account or

Census 1880 index, OH, vol III (N-Z) for Rider, Adam, DOB abt 1835. The
index shows MRPR - 116D. The MR means Marion county, the PR means
Prospect, the 116 is stamped on the upper right corner of the census
page, and the D means its the fourth page of 116. (Per LW visit

44, keeping house, born in Hesse, both parents born in Hesse. Son, Adam,
age 19, single, farm hand, born in Ohio. Son, Samuel, age 16, at school,
born in Ohio. Son, August, age 13, at school, born in Ohio. Daughter,
Katta, age 10, at school, born in Ohio. Son, Michael, age 9, at school,

6 Jul, in Ohio, Marion county, Waldo township, number 404 stamped on
page. Rider, Sr, Adam, age 25, farmer, value of real estate is $2, 000,
value of personal estate is $300, born in Hesse. Wife, Elizabeth, female,
age 23, born in Hamburg. Others in household were, Catherine, age 9,
female, born in Ohio; Eliza, age 1, female, born in Ohio; Augustus
Philipe, age 3 or 5 (probably 5), male, born in Ohio, possibly is a
nephew or Elizabeth's son. Two lines above Adam Rider on the census is
Wilhelmina Rider, age 34, female, born in Hesse (don't know who it is,
but it could be a sister); also Catherine Cusman (? Spelling), age 11,
female, born in Ohio. (Per LW visit to Mesa AZ Latter Day
Saints Family History Center on 16 Jun 1997).
Note from LP - The Catherine, age 9, is a Philippi. Augustus
Philippi is Nicholas Philippi's son by his second marriage to Henrietta.
Nicholas is the father of Elizabeth Philippi, Adam's wife.
The Soundex (microfilm 1,247,509 FHC) of OH, 1900, R360 (Rider), did not
contain "Adam", but did contain "Elizabeth". The soundex listed Reider,
Elizabeth, white, Born Sep 1836, age 63, birthplace is Germany,
citizenship is naturalized, now living in Marion county, Marion twp,
Marion city, at between 155 and 165 Jefferson St. Other members of the
family was Reider, Mike, son, born Jan 1875, age 25, born in Ohio. It
cited OH census 1900, volume 104, Enumeration District 62, sheet 7, line
38. (Per LW visit to Mesa AZ LDS Family history center on 16
Jun 1997).
Information found by LP, (lenphil@@pacbell.net), in the 1850 OH
Census, Tuscarawas county, Dover township, while looking for Nicholas
Philippi, on the same page. They lived three houses from Nicholas
Philippi. The listing is dwelling number 1302 and family number 1315.
Justice or Justia Rider, age 52, male, farmer, value of real estate owned
$400, born in Germany; Wilhelmina, age 48, female, born in Germany; Mary,
age 22, female, born in Germany; Justia or Justice, age 17, male,
Laborer, born in Germany; and Adam, age 14, male, born in Germany. Also
listed is Mary Burger, age 6, female, born in OH; Catherine Rider, age 1,
female, born in OH. No one was married within the year. None of the
children attended school within the year. No one was marked in the block
- persons over 20 years of age who cannot read or write. Since Nicholas
is on this page then Elizabeth was in his household and was a neighbor.
She and Adam would marry in 1857.

The census and soundex info starting in 1900 is confusing. There must be
two Elizabeth Rider's nearly the same age, with similar childrens name
and birthdates. I have the right one, I am positive. Her death
certificate confirms it.
Now Allen L Potts is saying that Elizabeth Philippi was married to
Augustus Rider, who was born about before our Adam Rider, and died 5
years later, according to all the census' I have found on him. I looked
at the 1880 OH census of Augustus Rider, born abt 1833 and his wife was
Leona, and the kids were the wrong kids. Augustus Rider IS NOT her
husband.
Census 1860 has born in Hamburg. Census 1880 has born in Hesse. Census
1900 has born in Germany. Census 1910 has born in Germany. Census 1900
has born Sep 1836.
The death date was provided by Pauline (Fryman) Neel, in Jan 1998. She
sent me a copy of a paper that she thinks was written by Cora Belle
(Lauer) Rider. This info conflicts with what Larry Welch found on the
1920 soundex, as it shows she was still alive in 1920. Could be two
Elizabeth Rider with same name, birth date, and same daughter's name and
birth date, but don't think it is too likely. [Need more research.]
The Soundex (microfilm 1,828,959 FHC) of 1920, for OH, for R360 (Rider),
under Elizabeth. The soundex lists Reiter, Elizabeth and shows her as
white, age 84, born in Ohio, located in Washington county, Marietta, at
811 Fifth Street. It shows that she in enumerated with George Stegmeier
and that she is his mother -in -law. (Per Larry Welch visit to Mesa AZ
LDS Family History Center on 16 Jun 1997).
The 1920 census (microfilm 1,821,447 FHC) is listed in volume 207,
enumeration district 204, sheet 8, line 59. Census shows that she is age
84, widowed, born in Ohio, (wife of George Stegmeier is Elisabeth, age
60). Parents both born in Germany and native tongue was German. (Per
LW visit to Mesa AZ LDS Family History Center on 16 Jun 1997).

On the census OH 1900 (microfilm 1,241,302 FHC) , Elizabeth is widowed,
number of years married is 43, number of children born is seven, and
number still living is four. She and parents born in Germany. (Per Larry

The 1910 census (microfilm 1,375,226 FHC) is listed under volume 128,
Enumeration District 82, house 73. Immigrated to the United States in
1849 and was naturalized. Daughter Kate is divorced with no kids born and
none living. (Per LW visit to Mesa AZ LDS Family History Center
on 16 Jun 1997).
Information found by LP, (lenphil@@pacbell.net), in the 1850 OH
Census, Tuscarawas county, Dover township. The listing is dwelling number

within the year. Only Elizabeth attended school within the year. No one
was marked in the block - persons over 20 years of age who cannot read or
write. Since Justice Rider is also on this census page, then Adam was in
his household and was a neighbor. They lived three houses from Justice
Rider. Elizabeth and Adam would marry in 1857.
