Here are some resources that are available for genealogical research in Virginia:

For vital records, write to:

They have birth, marriage, and death records since January 1853. However, records from 1896 to June 14, 1912, are only available for the following cities: Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, and Richmond. Divorce records are available from January 1918. For marriage records, also check with the Clerk of Court in the County or city where the license was issued. For death records, also check with the Clerk of Court in the County or city where the divorce was granted.
