DIRCK PAULUSZEN (HOFF) AND TWO WIVES OF NY & NJ

Dirck or Derrick PAULUSZEN (c 1640/50 Holland - will of 1722, proved 22 Dec 1730 NJ) migrated with his father Paulus DIRKSEN in 1650 to New Amsterdam. By 1663, he was old enough to join with his father and others to petition for a new concentration (village) back of Wallabout. His father's will of 29 Mar 1688 designated Dirk as eldest son of former wife, Geertje WILLEMSE. He md twice and lived on Long Island until late in life when he moved to Laurenceville, NJ. About the time of his move, he adopted the surname HOFF to comply with English law. His sons also carried this surname. There is no record that they had any relationship to anyone of that name.

Dirck md (1) Ecchje (or Aeghie) Tunis COVERT (c 1650 - before 1685), dau of Tunis and Barbara (LUCAS) COVERT. From 1677 through 1685, he was on a list of RDC members in the Flatbush congregation from Bedford, part of Brooklyn. Aeghie had five ch and may have died shortly after the last two were born:

1. Powell (c 1670/1680 NY - prob 1749/50 Hopewell twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ) by 1798 md Rachel STILES (c 1680 NY - before 1749 NJ), dau of Thomas STILES of Flushing, Queens Co, NY, and was listed in the Flushing census of 1798 without ch. In 1701, he purchased from the DAVIS family of Maidenhead, then Burlington Co, NJ, about 200 acres of land and settled there. In 1705, he and Rachel sold to John TALMAN the land in Flushing she had inherited from her father, Thomas STILES. Powell was on a list for Maidenhead, NJ, in 1712, along with his father, Derick, and brother, Thomas HUFF, for a tax assessment. On the 1741 Freeholders List for Hunterdon Co, NJ, there was one Powell HOFF in Hopewell twp, and another in Amwell twp. This Powell is believed to be the one in Hopewell twp. He made his will 10 Nov 1749, and it was proved in 28 Feb 1749/1750. He mentioned his children as Hannah; Richard; Rachel; and Isaac. Richard was Executor. Children may incl: Hannah; Richard; Rachel; Isaac; and John.

2. Pieter (c 1678 Brooklyn, NY - c 1748) also adopted HOFF as a surname. He md c 1704 Catherine BROUCARD (bp 14 Mar 1686 - before 1748), dau of Burgeon and Catherine (LE FEBRE) BROUCARD, and lived in Flushing, LI, and NJ. He was mentioned in the will of his father as a minor debtor to the estate. Ch incl Pieter; Borgon; Dirck or Richard; Catalyntje; Egen or Jannetje; Gertrude; Isaack; John; Elizabeth; and Aeghie. (Aeghie is not carried on some lists and may have been Egen or Jannetje.)

3. Teunis (c 1679 Brooklyn, NY - ) may be the Tunus HUFF in Hunterdon Co in 1722. If so, he is said to have settled in Somerset Co, NJ, where he left a Teunis HOFF will naming wife Jane and eldest son Richard. (An Anthony HOFF of Hunterdon Co, NJ, made a 24 Aug 1750 will, proved 29 Sep 1750, in which he listed his wife Anne, and his ch Anthony; John; Benjamin; and an unborn ch. This seems to have been a younger person.)

4. Johannes (twin) (bp 5/23/1680 - prob. d. young). Sponsors for the twins at baptism were Janses COEVERS and Jannitjen TEUNIS.

5. Wilhelmus (twin) (bp 5/23/1680 - prob. d. young).

Dirk md (2) on Long Island NY, Sarah Willemse JEETS (or YEATS) (c 1660 Flushing, Long Island - Lawrenceville, Mercer Co, NJ), dau of William and Mary YEATS, and she is believed to have had nine ch. In 1698, he was listed in Flushing, LI, with Sara and seven ch. Sarah was listed as Sarah WILLEMSE when her first child was born, and as Sarah YEATS for her other children.

6. Willem (bp 4/20/1685 Brooklyn - will of 30 Oct 1742 Monmouth Co, NJ, proved 20 Nov 1746). William HOFF is believed to have settled in Monmouth Co, NJ. His wife was Elizabeth ???, who made her will at Middleton in Monmouth Co, NJ, 1 July 1758. Ch indicated in the two wills and estate settlements were William; Leonard; Richard; John; Catherine A.; Sarah; Hannah; Christian; and Elizabeth. Some descendants remained in Monmouth Co. Some have suggested that Leonard and Richard HOFF and possibly John HOFF went to Southwest VA about 1760.

7. Dirck (or Richard)(bp 8/29/1686 Brooklyn, sponsor Geertje POULUS, - ). There was a Derrick HAFF or HOFF in Kingston twp, New Brunswick, Middlesex Co, NJ, who made his will 22 Oct 1747, possibly proved 1755, who named his wife Ann and listed two unnamed daus.

8. Sara (or Jannetje) (bp 5/27/1688, sponsor Geertje POULUS - ) md Jeremiah ANDERSON.

9. Thomas (bp 4/6/1690, sponsor Lucas and Marie COVERS - ) settled in Hunterdon Co, NJ, and left descendants. There was a Thomas HUFF there in Maidenhead on a 1712 tax assessment. A Thomas HUFF was there in 1722, then again in Hopewell twp as a Freeholder in 1741. Possibly in the next generation, there was a Thomas HOFF will of 8/13/1770 in Hunterdon Co which mentioned wife Winifreth (?JOHNSON), daus Rachel and Christian, and sons Thomas Cornelius, Jacob, and Andrew. Cornelius HUFF in turn had a 1816 inventory in Hunterdon Co.

10. Jan (bp 13 Mar 1692 - ) may be John HOFF of Hunterdon Co, NJ, in 1741.

11. Charles (c 1697 NY - ) is said to be the person who founded Pittstown, NJ, as HOFF. This may be Charles HOFF of Hunterdon Co, NJ, in 1722 and 1741. One Charles HOFF md Angelica JOHNSON and ch incl Charles, Jr; Cornelius; Peter; James; Gabriel; Patience; and Johanna.

12. Joseph (c 1700 NY - ) at first lived in Maidenhead with his parents. He may be the Joseph Huff there in 1722. He is believed to have later settled in Somerset Co, NJ. Either he or his son Joseph md Catherine CRAIG and had son Moses, who moved first to Loudoun Co, VA, then to KY. Moses adopted HOUGH as his surname.

13. Benjamin (c 1702 Lawrenceville, Mercer Co, NJ - ) is only known from the will of his father. Birth date was most likely before 1710. Sarah's first known child was born by 1685. It would seem biologically possible for her to have born children until about 1710/15. It has been suggested that the son Benjamin was possibly the person who went to Sussex Co, NJ, as Benjamin HOFF. (It has also been suggested that Benjamin HUFF/HOFF of Loudoun Co, VA, and Southwest VA was this son. As Benjamin HUFF's birth date was recorded as 28 Dec 1718, this suggestion does not seem biologically probable. More likely, this Benjamin HUFF was of another lineage; though he could have been a grandson.)

14. Mary (c1704 Lawrenceville, Mercer Co, NJ - ) md ??? GARY.

In his will of 1722, proved 12/22/1730 at Maidenhead, Hunterdon Co, NJ, Dirck listed heirs as: William; Richard; Thomas; Powell; John; Charles; Joseph; Benjamin; Sarah ANDERSON; Mary GARY, and Sarah (prob. the wife). Pieter was mentioned in the will, but only as a minor debtor to the estate. An early researcher noted that all the ch seemed to be of age in 1722, as no guardianship records were found. In 1741, Charles, Thomas, Powell, and John HOFF were freeholders available for jury duty in Trenton twp. Powell and Thomas HOFF were in Maidenhead twp, and this Powell and Thomas are believed to be the sons.
