General Notes: -- I received the following information from Mary Guinter's website --
Received from Mrs. Paul Schalles
ANTHONY PEPPERMAN (ANTON - ANDON PFEFFERMAN)- was born August 4, 1721, in Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his mother before
the Revolutionary War. One family record says 1731. No record of immigration could be found. He settled in Pennsylvania. Meginness states he settled in Virginia or Pennsylvania, however, no record could be found of him being in Virginia. He served in the Revolutionary War, under General Anthony Wayne, in York County. The PA Archives (S. VI, V2, p. 716) shows him in a group of York Militia "who apprehended British deserters, prisoners, and brought them to stockade fort". The list was in German and his name appeared as Andon Pfefferman. He could not write his name and probably spoke little English, so his given name might have sounded like Andon rather than Anton - German version of Anthony. The name Andrew
Pfefferman also appears on a list of Militia, and this also was probably Anton for the same reasons. The names Andon and Andrew never appeared on any later census or other records. After the war he settled in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pa. The PA Archives (III, V, X XI, p.429, 618) lists him as a taxable inhabitant in that township in 1781 and 1782. At that time he had no property or livestock. On April 4, 1794, he received a Warrant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, for 82 Acres and 52 perches of land in Shrewsbury Township. He married Margaret Carson Foulk, widow of Stephen Foulk, according to Meginness and some family records. There apparently were no children to this marriage. Later he married Elsey (Ehls) - surname unknown.
They had two children:
Anthony - born March 15, 1780, christened April 9, 1780
Eva Catharina - Oct. 6, 1782 christened Nov. 17, 1782
These births were recorded in records of Blymires United Lutheran & Reform Church (now St. James or John ) York Township, York County.
Meginness states Eva Catharina married Patrick McKenney and lived in York County.
Elsey died in 1810. her grave could not be found - nor any more information about her.
In 1814 Anthony moved to Clinton County with his son Anthony, Jr. and his family. He died in that County. His grave could not be found.
