Jesus, You Can Have My Lunch.

John 6:1-14

6:1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,

9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

In these Scriptures, we have a beautiful story and a great lesson.

We find this great Gospel Preacher, Jesus, has come over the Sea of Galilee and goes up into a mountain with His disciples. When He lifts up His eyes, He sees a great multitude which had come unto Him.

Notice this Scripture: "WHEN He lifted up His eyes." Do you suppose His eyes had been closed in prayer up to this time? They may well have been as we know that many times He went into the mountains to pray.

Notice, His first concern when He saw the people was their needs. This was one of the great things about our Lord, He was ever mindful of those around Him.

Notice also, upon seeing the people, the first words which fell from His lips was concerning their needs.

Now, let us look at those who came to see and hear Him. There was about five thousand men in this company besides women and children as we are told in:

Matthew 14: 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

There could well have been fifteen or twenty thousands people there that day. With all those people in Church, yet, not one man had brought anything to put into the Service. Not one woman had brought anything for the service. And of all the children there, only one had something that he could put into the service. Think of that, of all those people there, yet, only one little lad had anything to add to the service. What about you, the last time you were in service, did you have anything to add to the service?

Here is something I want you to notice real close: Not one Disciple had anything to put into that service. Not even the Lord Jesus had anything for the people though He did know what would happen.

How many times have I as a Minister gone into a Church service without one thing to feed the people. Many times I have searched over the congregation to see if anyone there had anything I could take to the Lord Jesus for His blessings that He might return to me in order to feed the people.

Notice, again, what this little lad had brought was just enough to meet his own needs as long as it was in his hands, but as soon as it was picked up by the Preacher (Andrew) and placed into the hands of our Lord Jesus for His blessings; notice: It was more than enough to meet the needs of every person that was there that day.

Let me say this, every time you come to the House of our God, be sure to bring whatever you have no matter how small you think it is. I assure you that when it is given into the hands of our Lord Jesus it will more than meet the needs of all who are present. I am sure that little lad never dreamed that his lunch could feed so many with so much left over. You will never know what our God will do with what you have till you place it in His hands.

Have you ever wondered what happened to all those twelve baskets which was left over? I have always believed that our Lord Jesus had them returned to that little lad for his loan. See, you can never out give our Lord, neither can you give to Him without Him giving back much more than He received.

Therefore we send forth this book, "Rev. Whatley’s Sermons" with a prayer that our Lord Jesus will meet the needs of all who read and that we also may be greatly blessed thereby.
