Daughter of James Miller and Rosanna Gann
Lewis was father of a large pioneer Ukiah, California, family. Made
two trips to California. The first was via the Isthmus of Panama and
the second was overland by wagon. Too young to leave for the
California gold fields in 1849 he had to bide his time until the
middle 1850's. After trying his hand for a time in the Sierra gold
fields he came to the Ukiah Valley and in 1857 homesteaded a piece
of property located on the east side of the Russian River southeast
of the current City of Ukiah on what is now identified as
Cunningham-Ruddick Rd. His ranch became the stopping over point for
the Ruddicks who moved west from Indiana to northern California,
Oregon and Washington. This ranch has remained in the Ruddick family
continously since its founding. A copy of the Ranch deed is in my
file and the original document of this property and several other
Ruddick (including the Cowsert place) properties are in the
possession of Chris Ruddick. Living on the parcel immediately south
of the "home place" was his older brother Abraham Marshall Ruddick.
When he departed Ukiah he deeded his property to Lewis. Also living
with Lewis were his sisters Catherine and Matilda. Matilda had
married William Buck who was also with her. The Bucks later moved to
Lake Co. then on to Jacksonville, OR, where both died and are buried
in unmarked graves in the Jacksonville Cemetary.

Lewis was the first child born to a WWII veteran of VFW
Post 1900, Ukiah, CA. Graduated from Ukiah High School June
1960. United States Army MPC from June 1960 to June 1963.
Served in Stuttgart, Germany and at Check Point Charlie,
Berlin, Germany. Was a military policeman throughout his
military service. Discharged as a Specialist 4th Class.
Enrolled at San Jose State College in September 1963 and
attended until 1970 when he graduated with a B A in Law
Enforcement and Administration. Attended Golden Gate
University, San Francisco, from 1973 until 1976 when he
graduated with a Masters Degree in Public Administration
(MPA). From April 20, 1965, to April 30, 1972, was employed
by the City of Milpitas, California, as a police officer
(1965 to 1969) and a police sergeant (1969 to 1972). Cited
for heroism for his actions at the scene of a fatal
automobile -train collision while he was a police officer.
On May 1, 1972, he was employed by the City of Clayton,
California, as their first Chief of Police and first full-
time city employee. He was responsible for founding the
city's police department. He continued in this position
until May 15, 1975. During 1975 and until February, 1976,
he was the assistant Branch Manager of American Patrol
Service, an industrial and water front security company, in
San Francisco, CA. From February, 1976, to March, 1977, he
was a criminal justice specialist with the Criminal Justice
Education and Training Resource System serving Santa Clara,
Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey Counties. On March 21,
1977, he once again became a Chief of Police. He served as
the Chief of Police for the City of Patterson, California,
until July 8, 1981. On July 9, 1981, he was employed as a
public safety officer (police officer) with the California
State University, Stanislaus, Turlock, California. He held
this position until he retired on June 6, 1992. On June 1,
1992, he and Toni Ruddick opened Ruddick's Field & Stream
Sporting Goods in Turlock, California. On November 1,
1995, they moved to a larger store a short distance from
their first store.
