"ASTHMA"
Asthma is a chronic lung
condition that causes breathing problems such
as wheezing, coughing and
a feeling of tightness in your chest.
Asthma can develop at any
age, however it is very common during
childhood. People
with Asthma have sensitive airways that are
easily irritated.
"Airway Inflammation"
- is when the airways become red and swoollen.
The symptoms are usually
delayed. last longer and are more
difficult to control. Things
that can 'induce' an attack, causing
the airways to 'over react'
and become inflamed are commonly,
allergens and respiratory
infection.
"Bronchoconstriction"
- is when the muscles around the airwayss
tighten or go into spasm.
Things that can 'trigger' an attack
are commonly, exercise,
inhaling substances, dust, cold air,
smoke and emotional stress.
There is also "Exercise
Induced Bronchspasm" - where
strenuous exercise can
cause the airways to narrow temporarily.
It causes coughing, wheezing,
chest tightness and shortness
of breath.

Very often 'inhalers' are prescribed.
'Bronchodilators'
are used when needed for a quick relief of
symptoms. They work
by relaxing the muscles around the
airways.
'Anti-Inflamatories'
are taken on a schedule to reduce swelling
of airways and build up
of mucus. It is crucial that this medication
is taken exactly as your
doctor prescribes for it to work properly.
There are 2 types of 'anti-inflamatories':
'Steroids and Nonsteroidal'
(Not the same as the steroids
athletes try to get away with using -
those are called 'anabolic')

A 'Nebulizer' is
often used for giving medications especially to
young children. The child
sits still with a mask on (like an oxygen
mask) and the medication
is changed from a liquid to a mist for the
child to breath in.

If your child has Asthma
- the school and the teacher should be/FONT>
made aware! They should
know:
a) the signs and symptoms,
b) what to do during an
attack,
c) child's doctors name
and phone number.
