"CHOCOLATE MERINGUE BARS"

1 cup butter or marg., softened
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 egg yolks
1 tbsp. cold water
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 cups flour
1 pkg. chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans

MERINGUE TOPPING:
2 egg whites
1 cup brown sugar

Cream butter, sugar and brown sugar together. Beat egg yolks, water and vanilla into butter mixture. Sift flour, salt and baking soda together.  Blend the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture. Spread evenly onto a greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle chocolate chips and nuts on top.  Beat the egg whites until stiffened. Add the brown sugar into the egg whites, a little bit at a time, beating constantly.  Spread the meringue over the chocolate chips and nuts. Bake for 30 minutes at 275*. Let cool completely then cut into bars.
