1. BEHEATHLAND BERNARD, b. 1635 in Westmoreland Co., VA, m. ANDREW GILSON in January 1663/64 in Stafford Co., VA and d. before March 30, 1720. in Westmoreland Co., VA.

NOTE: Beheathland Bernard m. first Frances Dade (1621-1662) in 1652. Frances Dade assumed the name of John Smith and in 1655 there was recorded a deed from Major John Smith and Beheathland, his wife. Before his death, he took his own name back. The following is the only possible reason for this disguise: "Major Smith, alias Dade, died on the return voyage from England in 1662. He was then known by the name of Dade, and up to the restoration of Charles II he called himself Smith and immediately after was known as Dade, the sudden change is very suggestive. he was doubtless a cavalier who had been implicated in one or more of the royalis plots previous to his coming to Virginia - a fact which has rendered it prudent for him to assume an alias." (See William & Mary Quarterly, p. 292-3)

Children of Beheathland Bernard and Francis Dade were Mary Dade, Anne Dade, William Bernard Dade, Elizabeth Dade and Francis Dade.
