St. Simon's Island, Georgia

This is the second lighthouse built on this site. The first was destroyed during the Civil War. It is one of five lighthouses in Georgia still standing, and was built in 1872. There are 129 steps to the top. The original third order fresnel lens is still in operation.

Civil war era cannons grace the grounds of this facility. There is a museum operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, and it is open to the public.

This photo shows a closeup of the white brick tower and ironwork railing around the top of the tower.

This lighthouse was photographed in 1984 while staying at nearby Jekyll Island. These images were reproduced from color slides.
