The Tybee Island Lighthouse is located just a short drive from Savannah, Georgia. We visited just prior to the Summer Olympics of 1996, and the helicopter pad at the lighthouse was being used as a staging area for the network helicopters covering the yachting event. The tower was restored in 1999, (since this photo was taken) and the head keepers house was scheduled for restoration during 1999-2000.
The tower is open to the public; however, a fee is charged. The climb to the top was rewarded with some outstanding views; we were warned about the yellow jackets that made their home in the tower.
The tower is 144 feet tall, and was rebuilt in 1867. The original lens was installed in 1791 but was replaced in 1867 with a first order fresnel lens. The light was automated in 1972.
There are two smaller lighthouses located along the Savannah River between Tybee Island and Savannah.
