FIRST CLEANUP OF THE SEASON
SCHEDULED
BY THE BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
The
Beautification Committee put in many hours
cleaning up along West John Street and Charlotte
Avenue in 1998. The results have been a
much improved appearance. Days are getting
longer and warmer and it's time for spring
cleanups to start.
Saturday, April 10th
is set as our first cleanup day (weather
permitting). We will get together at 8
AM at the intersection of West John and Wycoff
Streets near Gillison's factory. Coffee
will be provided. Please bring any
appropriate tools that you have - rakes, shovels,
pickup sticks, gloves, etc. Plastic bags
will be supplied. We will split up into
crews with one group cleaning up the median strip
from Strong Street to Newbridge Road. A
second crew will be deployed to the sidewalk by
the sump and if we have enough helpers we may
also clean up on Charlotte Avenue. Anyone
that can help should give Linda or Dale Bennett a
call.
On Litter...
Litter is simply "misplaced
solid waste" blown by wind and traffic and
carried by water. It travels until trapped
by a curb, building or fence. Once litter
has accumulated, it invites people to add
more.
Litter is a costly problem
that we all end up paying for
Why
do People Litter?
Research by Keep America Beautiful, Inc.
found that people litter because:
- They feel no sense of ownership, even
though areas such as parks and beaches are public
property.
- They believe someone else will pick up
after them.
- Litter has already accumulated.
- It's convenient.
Seven
Sources of Litter
Motorists and pedestrians are often
blamed for litter. However, there are
actually seven primary sources:
- Household trash at the curbside.
- Dumpsters used by businesses.
- Loading docks.
- Construction and demolition sites.
- Uncovered trucks.
- Motorists.
- Pedestrians.

Department of Natural Resources, Division
of Recycling & Litter Prevention brochure)
It
is the goal of the Beautification Committee to
change the attitudes of the residents, those who
do business here and those that just pass
through. We are focusing on West John
Street to create an image communicating to people
that the area should be kept clean.
Report Odors Promptly!!
The weather is warming up,
windows are open, residents will be outside more
and we will again be subject to offensive
odors. It's important to call each
time an odor affects you or your family's quality
of life. Complaints should
be registered with the Nassau County Health
Department at the time you witness an odor.
( 572-3232
Mon.- Fri.; 9 am - 4:45 pm. The
Health Department generally sends an inspector
immediately. At other times report problems
at 742-6154.
Make sure the person answering the phone logs
your call even if other residents have
called. Call only when odors are
present. Do not state where the odors are
coming from. We have two asphalt plants in
the neighborhood. Both affect us. The
inspector that is sent out on the call has the
responsibility of determining the source.
Civic Web Sites
Visit
the NorthWest Civic Association at http://www.oocities.org/
heartland/lake/1579/. The
new web site is hosted without charge by
GeoCities. The site includes a homepage
about our civic's purpose, the geographical area
we represent, the dates and location of meetings
and a listing of our current officers. Our
homepage is linked to pages that include a
membership application, online versions of the
1999 newsletters and photos from "Looking
Back in the Northwest."
We are also collaborating
with the Hicksville Southwest Civic Association
on a page concerning "Civics in and About
Hicksville." This is an ongoing
project. If you have information about
Civics that we haven't listed or don't have up to
date information on, we would like to here from
you. The Hicksville Southwest Civic
