The next meeting of the NorthWest Civic Association will be held on Monday, June 7th, at 7:30 PM at the Burns Avenue School.  We will have three short presentations.
Pat Conway, President of the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce, will review developments at Kennedy and Fountain Parks and business happenings.
A representative from the Broadway Mall will bring us up to date on their construction.  The J. C. Penney Store is being built, the parking lots are being refurbished and landscaped.  The West John Street entrance is slated for eventual redoing.
A bus company has bought property and a building on the west side of Charlotte Avenue just south of the LIRR.  Representatives from the company will be at the meeting to give a short presentation on their proposed plans and operations.

Picnic Arrangements are Proceeding

Arrangements are being finalized for our summer picnic on  Sunday, July 25, 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Cantiague Park.  The price will be $1 per person, which is less than the cost of a hot dog!  John Russo is busy organizing the event and soliciting donations of food.  We can use help with setting up, cleaning up and organizing games and amusements.

May is Membership Month

Membership renewals are due in May.  Remember everyone who renews on time or becomes a member this month will have their name entered in the Mystery Box drawing to be held at the June meeting .  Millie Jones will make the last mail pickup on June 4.   Make sure that your membership payment is received by this date!

Health Fair

The Health Fair hosted by the Burns Avenue School on Friday, April 30 was very well received.  There were several dozen tables with health and safety information and handouts.  The fair was attended by school children, adults and seniors.  A good time was had by all.  Our civic table with environmental handouts was well received and everyone enjoyed taking home a packet of wildflower seeds.

Beautification Committee

The Beautification Committee is working with RICH. (Revitalization in the Community of Hicksville).  RICH is a collaborative between the Hicksville Youth Council, the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and the NorthWest Civic Association.

The collaborative received a grant from the Nassau County Youth Board last fall with the HYC named as the lead agency.  Four young men are working with members of the Beautification Committee each Saturday.  Areas cleaned are the grass median strip on West John Street just to the west of Newbridge Road, the sidewalk at the sump across from Agway and Fountain and Kennedy Parks between Broadway and Jerusalem Avenue .  The collaborative is hoping to expand by getting other Hicksville Civics to work with the four youths in their area during the summer.
We try to have four beautification committee members working with the young folks each time.  In fairness to all we can not call on the same members each week.  We are looking for a few more good men and women that can devote two hours on Saturday mornings once or twice a month.  We  realize that everyone is busy so we're keeping the cleanup time from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.  This is an opportunity for civic members to give something back to their community.

Below left:  The white areas are Stryrofoam cups in the sump near Agway.  This sump has had little or no maintenance since DeJana bought a portion of the sump property from Nassau County in the mid 1980's.  During the weeks of May 17 and 24 a new access ramp was constructed into the sump and many truck loads of accumulated material were removed.

The work in the sump was facilitated by Legislator Edward Mangano of the 17th District cooperating with the NorthWest Civic Association in their campaign to improve conditions along West John.
