MAY MEETING
The
next meeting of the NorthWest Civic Association
will be held on Monday, May 3rd, at 7:30 PM at
the Burns Avenue School.
Our guest speakers for
May will be representatives from Twin County
Recycling Corporation. Twin County has
submitted an application to the Town of Oyster
Bay that would change it's operation and the use
of it's land holdings along West John Street. The
basics of the proposed change were reported in
the March newsletter.
A recap of that information
follows:
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
- The new asphalt plant
would be located between Engel and Laurel Streets
just off of West -John Street on 2.2 acres of
what is known as the VIM property (formerly the
Zara plant).
- The hours of operation would be
extended from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M. with an option to
operate at night, if contracts require night
deliveries.
- Proposed plant capacity is 500 tons
per hour. Six storage silos of 300 tons
each will replace the four 100 ton silos
currently in use.
- Truck traffic would enter via Engel
Street and exit via Laurel Street.
- A fifteen foot high fence would
surround most of the new plant.
- The 16 acres surrounding Agway
would be converted into senior housing and an
assisted care facility. The first phase of
construction would be 104 units and the second
phase 116 units for a total of 220 units.

|
One
should note that with proposals of this type you
can expect to see changes from the initial to the
final submittals. Anyone who's been
impacted by the asphalt operations over the
years, will certainly want to attend. Our
school and government representatives have all
been invited. You need to know what's at
stake, so that when hearings are held at the Town
of Oyster Bay you'll be able to give your input.
The outcome of this application, whatever the
result, will have a long term effect on us.
So formulate questions that you want answered and
be at this meeting!
