Our summer picnic will be at Cantiague Park, Sunday, July 25th from 12 noon to 4 PM.  We will be located in the picnic area near Parking Field 2.  A donation of $1 is suggested per person.  Bring friends, neighbors and the kids and enjoy the good food, friendship, games and swimming at the pool.  We can use help in setting up and cleaning up.  If you can lend a hand, please let John Russo know at 822-2937.  Thanks to John for all of the time and effort he is putting into this event.  Where can you get a better deal than this.  Bring chairs and your appetite.

NOTES FROM THE JUNE MEETING

It was pretty hot at the June meeting, with high temperatures all day long.  That didn't stop a number of members from coming and enjoying our last meeting of the season.  The winner of the Mystery Box with its various and delightful goodies was Pat Stutts.  She wrote to say "thanks" to all.  Not only did it surprise Pat, but it also had curious members wanting to know what was in it.  Thanks to Linda Bennett and John Russo for putting it together and all the merchants who generously provided items for this fun drawing.
The "
Night on the Town" drawing was won by Eileen Russo.  John and Eileen have been putting much time and effort into getting our picnic set up.  We hope they enjoyed their "night on the town."  Thanks again to the Broadway Mall, the Red Lobster  and National Amusements for making it possible with their generous donations.
Refreshments at the meeting were enjoyed by all, courtesy of Veronica Romanelli, Alice Groody and Fran Broska.

Kuhl Avenue Preserve

On Monday, June 28th, the Nassau County Legislature passed an ordinance to designate a parcel of land west of Kuhl Avenue and south of Cantiague Park in perpetual preservation.  The land will serve as a small nature preserve.  The county has added an entrance, removed dead trees, planted some flora, etc.  Thanks goes to Sharon Sherry whose initiative brought county officials' attention to this property and to County Executive Gulotta and Legislator Ed Mangano who followed up on Sharon's suggestions and advocacy.

CONSTITUTION

This fall the proposed changes to the constitution will be discussed - REALLY!  There just hasn't been time at the last two meetings.  Proposals have to be discussed at two meetings before we vote on them.  Changes have not been made in the constitution for years and some are needed as we approach the year 2000.

Civic Honor Roll

Our sincere thanks goes to the following organizations and businesses for their recent support:
Vietnam Veterans of America for supporting our "Night on the Town" drawing.
Agway for their donations of flowers to beautify the West John Street median strip.  Check out the planting near the Strong Street end of the island.
Sun Up Pizza for donating a gift certificate for each of the spring membership meetings.  A winner of a pizza was drawn at each of the meetings.

NOMINATIONS

It will soon be time for elections.  We're looking for candidates to run for office and Jo-Ann Broska, Sergeant at Arms is heading a nominating committee.  If you're interested in running for an office or know someone who is, please get in touch with Jo-Ann at 681-8523.

Billiard Parlor

An application has been made to the town for opening a billiard parlor across Broadway from the Reptile Museum.  The Town of Oyster Bay has recommended that the attorney for the owner contact the Hicksville Civics and the Community Council for community reaction.  The civics have been contacted.  However, as no meetings are planned during the summer, no membership response would be available. The issue will be brought up when meetings resume in the fall.  In the meantime, if you've got some feelings about it, one way or another, let the town know.

------------------------------------------
Next Membership Meeting

Our next meeting is tentatively set for Monday, September 13 at the Burns Avenue School.  Fall meeting dates must be firmed up with the school at the end of the summer, but this is the date we will try to get.  Members will receive a post card notification prior to the meeting.

Report Asphalt Odors Promptly!!
It's important to call each time an odor affects you or your family's quality of life.
Nassau County Department of Health 571-3232  Mon.- Fri.;  9 am - 4:45 pm
At other times report problems at 742-6154.

Make sure the person answering the phone logs your call even if other residents have called.  Call only when odors are present.  Do not state where the odors are coming from.  We have two asphalt plants in the neighborhood.  Both affect us.  The inspector that is sent out on the call has the responsibility of determining the source.
