The Churches of Charleston
County also served as the parishes which
were actually the boundaries
for the sole purpose of handling legal
matters...such as taxes,
wills, probates and for voting. The government
established these parishes
so the settlers would not have so far to travel.
Prior to the parishes everyone
in the SC colony had to travel into Charleston.
