CHARLESTON COUNTY
Charleston
County has an abundance of Historical Success. It was the heart of South
Carolina for decades. It was the wealthiest of
all the colonial
colonies, enabling our ancestors to demand the highest quitity of products
to produce the highest quility of lifestyles, therefore
giving reasonas
to why we are still graced by the beautiful homes, plantations, churches,
and other important landmarks and keepsakes that we
still cherish and
preserve to this day!
Charleston
County, like many others, has only a handful of the stately plantations
still in existence. Most were destoryed during or as a
direct result of
the Civil War. Alot were burned by Union troops. Others fell into neglect
after the war when they were abandoned due to lack
of help (slaves)
and funds needed to operate such large estates. In time they either just
crumbled away or were destroyed by other forces. The
ones that were saved
and preserved within the County are considered some of the most beautiful
plantations in America and are listed on the National Historical Register.
It is known for its numerous historic Churches, Cemeteries and "Public"
buildings. Also for two important military "Forts" that played a major
role in both the Revolutionary and the Civil War. Most of the historic
landmarks within the County lie in Charleston.
CITY OF CHARLESTON
The city of Charleston,
is by far, the most historical location in South Carolina. It contains
most of the states oldest well perserved homes, churches, cemeteries and
"Public" buildings which are still in existence and in use today. If you
have never had the opportunity to visit Historic Charleston, then I urge
you to do so.
The Historic
District of Charleston doesn't just consist of one or two homes, but rather,
street after street lined with some of the most beautiful homes in America,
even by today's standards, with most dating back to the 1700 - 1800's and
a few as far back as the 1600's. Almost all are still
just as manificiant
as the day they were built and are still occuppied as personal residences.
Words can't hardly
describe the feeling that overcomes you while strolling down the old cobblestone
streets overhung by the huge live Oaks. You almost get the feeling that
maybe...If you close your eyes for only a minute_you just might get a glimpse
of days goneby; or...If you stand very still_you just might feel the clomping
of holves or the rumbling of carriage wheels beneath your feet; or...If
you remain quite enough_ you just might hear the soft russell of a dress,
as it passes you by or the long-ago laughter escaping from the house that
lies just beyond the old cobblestone and just behind the overhung oaks;
or... maybe_
It's just wishful
thinking!!
