Abraham, Abrams,
Prevost, Mattuce, Sigwald, Jones, Welsch |
Alexander Abrahams,
age 6, his twin sister, Rosanna Abrahams,
and
their little brother, Charles TheodoreAbrahams,
age 5, were admitted to the Charleston Orphan House on 15 April 1830 by
Joseph Prevost.
According
to the Orphan House log for that period, there was a 4th Abrahamschild
who was not admitted, being considered "too young" by the board. We don't
know the name of that child or what happened to him or her. The parents
of the Abrahamschildren,
Levi & Elizabeth M. Abrahams
had recently died. A funeral notice for Elizabeth M. (possibly Mattuce)
Abrahams lists Joseph Prevostas
her son, so possibly he was a step-brother of the Abrahamschildren.
All three children were later indentured to Joseph Prevost,
Rosanna as a 'domestic'
at age 11, the two boys later. The two boys apparently were trained in
metal work, with Alexander becoming a blacksmith, and Charles working as
a boilermaker. [In 1859, JosephPrevostdeeds
a house, in trust, to Charles T.Abramsfor
$5.00.]
The Prevost name was handed down in my family as far as my grandmother who was named Julia Prevost Abrams. A Prevost descendant living near Anderson, SC has told us that there is no family connection between the Prevost& the Abrams families, but I'm not yet convinced. She lists the mother of Joseph Prevost as Mary Mattuce. Charles Theodore Abrams (the name was shortened by the time the children came out of the orphan house), my 2 x great grandfather, married Georgianna R. Sigwald, widow of John Jones. The Sigwaldfamilygoes back to the 1750's in Charleston. Alexander Abrams married Permelia Welsch at Bethel, in Charleston, in 1848. They had a large family including twins they named Rose and Alexander. My information comes from published records of the Charleston Orphan House, a personal visit to the Charleston City Archives for a look at the original logs, and family history. marshcat@bellsouth.net August

Nopie/Nopee, Baker | Another Charleston Orphan
House story is that of William Nopie
(or Nopee)
who was admitted to the Orphan House on 13 Jan. 1814 aged 5 years, by Esther
Nopie, his mother. He was indentured first to a carpenter, Henry Willis,
then indentured to John C. Sigwald (also
a carpenter) on July 19, 1827. The indentures expired in 1830, and in 1834,
William Nopie
married his former master's mother-in-law, Martha E. Christian Baker,
widow of Noah Dutton Baker
(and my 4x great grandmother), somewhat senior to him in age.
My information comes from published records of the Charleston Orphan House, a personal visit to the Charleston City Archives for a look at the original logs, and family history. marshcat@bellsouth.net August
