First a brief history of the newspaper followed by some excert from 1760...
History
of the Newspaper
The
South Carolina Gazette one of the two first newspapers that was
started in 1732. Its
creator and first editor was Thomas Whitmarsh.
Unfortunely, the paper
folded in September 1733 when Whitmarsh died,
only eighteen months
after his arrival from England.
With the assistance of
Benjamin Franklin, Lewis Timothy assumed the
editorship of the gazette,
and his family published it until the American
Revolution. Lewis Timothy
died in December 1738, leaving a wife Elizabeth,
six children and one
on the way. Immediately upon his death she assumed
control over the paper
and notified the public that she intended on making
the newspaper "as entertaining
and correct as possible. She succeed, but
it was not easy. During
the sickly months of September and October 1739
she buried two of her
children. Elizabeth Timothy, was one of the most
successful women ectrepreneurs
in colonial times. She proved to be an
excellent businessperson
and was able to buy out Benjamin Franklin's
interest in the paper.
When her son Peter reached majority in 1746, she
turned the business over
to him. Although she was the actual editor and
publisher for seven years,
her son's name appeared on the masthead.
