A Baptismal Record

The 1878 baptismal record of my maternal grandmother's
maternal grandmother, Anna de Jesus Candida.

Church records, at least in the Diocese of Vizeu and the Diocese of Guarda, did not generally
record childrens' births. Rather, they tended to make note of the date the child was baptized.
Nevertheless, the entries usually make note of the birth date as well. Occasionally, a consciencious
priest will go back and make notes in the margins of the subjects' marriage and/or death details.

Here is an example of a church baptism record which contains such notes.

AND ITS TRANSLATION

Aos vinte e cinco dias do mez de Abril do
anno de mil, e outo centos, e setenta, e outo
nesta Igreja Parochial do Germil Concelho
de Penalva do Castello Dioceze de Vizeu
baptizei solemnemente a um individuo do
sexo femenino a quem dei o nome de Anna
que nasceu nesta freguezia pelos dez horas da
manha a do dita mez, e anno, filha
legitima de Antonio de Almeida, e de
Joaquina Candida proprietarios naturaes de
Germil recebidos nesta Igreja de Germil
Parochianos da mesma moradores em Germil:
neta paterna de Joze Antonio, e de
Jozefa Rita naturaes de Germil; materna
de Antonio Marques, e de
Guimar de Jezuz naturaes de Germil. Forao
Padrinhos Bernardino Marques, e sua
mulher Anna Angelica proprietarios
moradores em Germil, os quaes todos sei
serem os proprios. E para constar lavrei
em duplicado este assento, que depois de ser
lido, e conferido perante os
padrinhos estes nao assignarao por nao

On the twenty fifth day of April in the
year one thousand eight hundred seventy eight,
in the parish church of Germil, municipality
of Penalva do Castello, Diocese of Vizeu,
I solemnly baptized an individual of the
female gender, to whom I gave the name Anna,
who was born in our parish at ten o'clock in the
morning of the above month and year, legitimate
daughter of Antonio de Almeida and of
Joaquina Candida, homeowners, natives of
Germil, welcome in the Church of Germil,
parishioners of the same, residents of Germil:
paternal granddaughter of Joze Antonio and of
Jozefa Rita, natives of Germil; maternal
[granddaughter] of Antonio Marques and of
Guimar de Jezuz, natives of Germil. The
godparents are Bernardino Marques and his
wife Anna Angelica, homeowners,
residents of Germil, whom I know and
vouch for. In testimony thereof, I made an entry
in the duplicate of this record, which was later
read and checked in the presence of the
godparents, who will not sign, as they are not
able to write. Date as above.

Igreja paroquial de Germil no dia 20 de
Novembro de 1895; desdo este casamento
sido dissolvido por obito do conjuge,
falecido ma dita freguesia as quinze horas
do dia 26 de Abril de 1937. Boletim no. 130.

2. - Faleceu ma freguesia de Germil, concelho
de Penalva do Castelo as 11 horas do dia

Fevereiro de 1964. 1. - Married Antonio Ferreira, age 29 years, a
native of the parish of Germil, son of Jose
Ferreira and Josefa Maria, at the
Germil parish church on the 20th day of
November, 1895. This marriage
was dissolved upon death of the spouse,
who died in this parish at 3:00 p.m.
